I have a 2017 Sierra 5.3 doin the exact same thing maybe three times now. Soon after starting and driving maybe 100 or less feet the oil pressure spikes and the engine light flashes with the traction control light coming on. Dry pavement and under 40 km/h.

Petermackenzie:

Curious: Start engine cold and let idle. Watch the Oil Pressure.

If same as mine, you should be able to hear the oil pump solenoid click, then the oil pressure will spike.

??

Also: Rough idle after spike

Just a long shot: Unrelated events for me: Have you changed thermostat and/or temp sensor recently?

Hey Bentley, did you figure out the problem and solution. I have a 2017 Silverado 6.2 with the exact symptoms except mine is cylinder 6 P0306 fault code.

HawaiianRR: This has been a relatively complicated problem. Please read thread to see what I have done.

Presently, there is vacuum pressure problem on cylinder 8 and misfire, which is now spreading to 7 etc.

My guess is there is some kind of back pressure into the oil pump which is nullifying the pressure relief valve.

If I were crazy, I would bring it into GM and they would now replace lifters and rods, but then I would not know if the Cam is scored. So then replace the Cam, but then I don't know if the Cam bearings are shot (leaky). [I am guessing that the oil is leaking through the bearings causing the back pressure...]

Of course, after spending thousands, I still would not have addressed the heads and valves....

My solution: I have ordered an engine. So far I have been waiting about 2 months.

When the engine comes and is installed, I will immediately add a catch can and possibly nullify the AFM electronically.

CONCLUSION: I will never buy a truck newer than 2007 again. The fella replacing my engine said he has a lineup of GMs, Fords, and Dodges waiting for engines. The cause is all the emission control crap, direct injection etc.

Should have ordered the L8T as a replacement engine. There's no AFM on it.

Man o man, not looking good. I’m gonna take off the valve cover and see if I have a rocker/lifter issue.

thanks for the reply!

HawaiianRR: What is the mileage on your truck?

230k lol

took off the valve cover saw the bent rod. Took out the bent rod looked in the hole with a scope and the lifter is collapsed and fell apart when I put a magnet to see if was busted. Yup, it’s toast

HawaiianRR: Ughh. Curious what your plan is.

I told my wife to post on fb that I keep forgetting to take the keys out of my truck. Perhaps someone will jump on the opportunity to drive the truck into the lake. (lol)

Lmao. That’s a good idea too!

my plan is to take the passenger side head off and pray that the cam lobe is fine. If so, I’ll change the lifters on that side with OEM afm stock ones to match driver side and get hp tuner and reprogram the ecu to delete the dod/afm

2017 Yukon 5.3

same issue here I’ve been chasing down the cold start misfire and or random cylinder misfire for a couple weeks. Noticed the spike in oil pressure this afternoon that matched perfectly as the TC and CEL came on flashing. And the misfire starts. This only happened when the engine is cold. I can shut it down clear CEL and start right back up and no misfire no CEL.

replaced

injectors

plugs

wires

O2 bank 1 sensor 1&2( this is for the random air fuel bank 1 CEL)

Pulled the head off and took out the broken lifter. Camshaft lobe is not damaged. I plan to put 8 new gm lifters and guides. Replace the 1 bent pushrod. Change the filter in the VLOM because it’s easy on the top and can’t imagine that would hurt anything.  Button it back up with gm gaskets and get the HP tuner software to disable the DOD/AFM in the ecm. Then pray all holds up for some time

    • I was the GM of a Lincoln Mercury dealership back in the 80's. The service lot was always full with "broken" ones. Plenty of transmissions, power windows and a/c repairs. The only one I'd consider owning would be the Marauder at this point and it certainly wouldn't be a daily driver.  My 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate is my "Lincoln Town Car" in my retirement. I want all the "stuff". Big infotainment screens, one touch power windows, Supercruise (I won't buy another vehicle without it), hands free pretty much everything. I'm going to swap my current truck for a 2027 Yukon Denali Ultimate so I can have the air suspension and surround vision recording along with all the other "stuff".
    • Yep mine is on backorder also.
    • The Denali Ultimate's grille is tinted, but the "regular' Denali has a bright chrome grille like the current models.
    • Because that is IDIOTIC, much like this question. They've already been forced to do it by past administrations - why would you roll that back when it's a GOOD thing?  WHO IS ARGUING FOR LOWER MILEAGE???? 😂  NOBODY IS!!   I'm certainly not! What I want is RELIABLE vehicles again that are worth the price paid!    I don't get your logic here ...   In 2003 I paid $2,200 for our '86 Grand Marquis. It's STILL running and I've never been inside the engine, aside for the timing cover since it was leaking, so I threw a new timing set in since that makes sense. Transmission is ORIGINAL. Electric pump in the gas tank is ORIGINAL. Rear end is ORIGINAL. I'd have to hit my head REAL hard to want to pay $60k or more for a car that still can't come close to the comfort, seating and storage space, or reliability of this one. Nothing is even in the ball park! Hundreds of thousands of brands and models have been built and sent to the crusher while this one keeps on going!   https://postimg.cc/Z9XRrCSg   I've got a whole fleet of cars, motorcycles, and a truck close to this age for summer and winter. No one could pay me enough to buy anything built this century. I have zero use for any it.
    • Since I'm the one who has to fix them when they break, I'll take vehicles over 30 years old all day, EVERY day, over ANY modern crap. Have you attempted any repairs on anything built after 2006? It's a friggin nightmare, and gets worse the newer the model year.    If I had the will or desire, I can make any car of any age outside of a Model T (I don't have THAT much will ...) just as powerful, comfortable, and have all the tech the new stuff does, and get pretty close in mileage, too. I prefer SIMPLICITY. The less the vehicle has, the less to fix WHEN it breaks, not IF.   I'm glad you snot-nosed punks don't like them. More for us, plus that keeps the prices from climbing more than they already have.👍
