So surly those out there with the 3.0 liter Duramax is happy with the fuel mileage, however what about thoughts of the rubber drive belt for the engine oil pump? Got ya scared?

Is it still the LM2 or the upgraded LZ0? I don't have access to a built sheet yet.

Don't have a 24, but a 23 Tahoe with the 3.0l. The LZ0 won't be in the SUVs until the 25 model year.

This is my 2nd 3.0l diesel (1st was a 21 Silverado) and no worries about the belt. The recommended change for the belt is now 200K.

As for fuel mileage the Tahoe gets between 20 and 28 MPG depending on highway vs city and how you drive it.

And what about engine oil?  0W20 Dexos "D" available for aftermarket or big box stores and affordable prices. Or is a dealer item?

I guess you rely on the dealer for service still on your tahoe, it's a really new unit?

 

Plus did you ever change the fuel filter yourself on your 2021 LM2? Any issues there?

Mobil 1 sells the Dexos D oil and you can order the AC Delco oil from Amazon too, it's not a dealer only thing.

AutoZone stores near me carry the Mobil 1 Dexos D oil. The factory oil is made by Mobil. I haven't changed the oil on the Tahoe yet but did several times on my 21 Silverado. The fuel filter is easy to change. FWIW the fuel filter assembly is the same one used on the 6.6l L5P trucks so the filter is easy to find. Don't buy fuel filters on Amazon, even when they say it's a GM/AC Delco filter it more likely a cheap knock-off.

I had a 3.0 ordered.. then went 5.3

i have had a lot of oil burners.. the last one I had to pull a head to change a ceramic glow plug.. too much carbon on it get it out without breaking it. I just think it’s too much. All the belts and chains in the 3.0 are on the back of the engine. The fuel filter changes, DEF.. and fuel four bucks a gallon. I see no way it will cheaper than a 5.3

We had a 2022 Tahoe with the 3.0 Duramax. It was a great vehicle; I believe the lifetime mileage was north of 25 MPG. Unfortunately, it got totaled at 38,000 miles. We just picked up a 2024 Tahoe with the 3.0 on Saturday. Hopefully, this one treats us just as well. No worries about the oil pump belt, and I believe the recommended service was increased as Jay P mentioned.

You see I got a problem just thinking about a rubber belt that operates in an engine oil splash environment.

 

I worked on Detroit Diesels for 15 years and beyond. When Benz took them over I saw them do some crazy changes.....but never a rubber belt, an important one, run where there's engine oil splash!

So I'm showing interest in a 2024 "LS" Tahoe. While it is equipped with a trailer towing receiver and 7 pin lighting/control plug, the unit does not have the optional trailering "max" package.

Therefore it does not sport the factory installed integrated on-dash trailering controls.

 

I've had great luck with the aftermarket "Tekonsha" line of aftermarket trailer towing control devises.

 

To use something like "P3" dash mounted controller, past positive experience on older (2014 and up) GM pick up truck line has found the need for the GM supplied adapter harness P/N 23184088.

 

Anybody out there have intel on this aftermarket configuration on the Tahoe line, and particularly the 2024 model year?

Took the base unit for a test drive today. Incredible is the ride and really, the 3.0 is indeed a quiet runner.

 

On the way back I got my sales guy to drive and I sat in the back. As crazy as it may be, I said a couple of times "no wonder the cops like these things".

 

There's nothing wrong with "base", if one is into that.

Watched a You Tube video today with a talented/comical tech tear down a 3.0 liter Duramax with 146,000 miles on it.

It indeed had packed it in and the carnage was not evident till the head was lifted.

 

The outcome was an engine starved for oil. Tensioners for the overhead cam chains did not work with little to no oil pressure.

Things internally went into a tail spin from there I assume?

 

What was impressive was the rubber/kevlar oil pump drive belt and it's condition after 146,000 miles!

Anybody who follows Detroit Diesel products closely will find this way smaller 3.0 liter engine is still a basic same design as the DD13/DD15 series.

 

Thinking from Germany, can't get over the shape of the cylinder head, over head cam design even pump locations are very much the same.

This 3.0 liter diesel is an Opel engine out of Germany, not Japanese like the larger Duramax marketed diesels. For your FYI.

    • I agree with Tim.  As tech heavy as engines are these days, no way I’d be an early buyer of the new 6.6.  Of course, I bought my ‘26 Denali w/the 6.2 after dumping my Tundra with it’s defective 3.5 liter imploding engine disaster, so I’m a little gun-shy.  That said, my 6.2 has been rock solid.  I don’t drive it like I do my BMW Z4 M40i, but I don’t baby it either.  I got a V8 for a reason.  But I’m averaging 18 around town and 22 highway.  I have seen 24 highway as well when I wasn’t loaded up heavy.  Considering my Tundra with the twin turbo V6 only got 14.5 in town and 17 on the road, I’ll take the 6.2 all day, every day.  If I were you, I’d grab a ‘26 while you can.  Inventories are probably gonna start dropping and I’ll bet the deals will start looking sweeter as well.
    • I am curious if anyone has figured out a way to add an hard button AUX or 360 Camera switch to the center row of switches. I have a 2021 AT4, and want to split the hill decent button and add a 360 camera button so that you don't have to go into the center display and locate the camera functionality, etc...   My father's 2024 Yukon XL AT4 and it has a hard button, see below. I found this thread on the Yukons, but it seems like there may not be a part number for the 2021 sierras. https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/255339-adding-hard-button-for-camera-on-2021/ Anyone else figured this out.     • Through the years it hasn't been my typical method as I tried to drop oil on an engine that was hot from having been worked, however that was not always practical and had to fire up a unit and let it warm up reasonably well and drop the oil when I had the time to do it but am referring to not only vehicles but a variety of farm equipment and highway tractors etc. However on a vehicle where one is crawling under it and the exhaust is nearby to ones body and if wanting to pull the plug without danger of being hit with boiling hot oil or attempting to remove a HOT oil filter, its sure safer and easier to not have everything smoking hot and can remove the filter right away when under the vehicle and let it all drain. Of course its not the end of the world if a bit of oil stays in the engine that might have eventually found its way out, I like to get out as much as possible but any oil changes that take place in shops would rarely be sitting around for very long at all before the plug is thrown back in and filter slapped on and oil poured in and sent out the door quick like. There would be very little time spent ( assuming they even did it ) in starting the engine with oil to fill the filter, then waiting to verify the level on the stick. A good reason to check ones oil level shortly after a shop changed the oil on a vehicle just to make sure its correct and to look under for any oil around the drain plug or filter.
