I am curious what it "officially" says about the level check in the rear differential ?

I have a service document that I cropped a piece of that says .4in or 10mm below the fill plug.

They are filled by American axle when the rearend assy is built. GM does not check them nor does the dealer during the PDI. Many on here (me included) have found their rear diff to be almost a qt low based on this procedure.

Mu understanding was that GM was made aware of it but there was no confirmation of anything actually being done about it. A couple of people asked their dealer to check the truck during PDI and reported that there was fluid added.

0mm-10mm below the plug

My plan is to fill it level to the plug so for me it will be 0mm

Its definitely counter intuitive to pull the plug in the pan and leave it out while the truck is running. There is a "standpipe" that extends upward into the pan. It is set so that the excess will drain into the standpipe and out the hole. This is what sets the level.

Is it though?  Its no different than checking the ATF level with a dipstick.  Its always checked running on an automatic transmission.  You are just checking it with that plug and the standpipe.  If it were off, it would piss out a few quarts of fluid out that hole.

Not if you understand the system, my experience here and other places is that most people arent familiar with it and believe its a drain plug.

Knowledge of how to properly check trans fluid level is not widespread. I used to have to conduct training on it when I was working. These were people that typically test in the top 10% for mechanical aptitude. I suspect it may have had something to do with why GM now uses he system that they do.

Seems to be a straightforward system to me. All you have to do is read the procedure once and it makes total sense.

There are a lot of people that shouldn't be touching their own trucks.

That is very true.  Good friend was a GM tech for many years, then service advisor.   He recounted once about how many idiots work on their own vehicles but know little to nothing about what they are doing.  People with bad eyesight who could not see the ATF on the dipstick and insist he was lying when he told them it was at the full level. When another tech would verify, they would leave po'd thinking it was low and  needed fluid.

Common sense is not all that common.

Watch "just rolled in" on Youtube. Every conceivable crazy thing is on there.

I dont hold out any hope for humans getting smarter.

The mark of a good do it yourself mechanic is knowing when youre in over your head and its time to use your checkbook (or debit card) rather than your wrenches.

I bought the OEM manual from factorymanuals.net. I gave them all my vehicle info including VIN and they gave me a download link for the manual in 4 parts. Would have liked it to be one file but it works fine.

Here is the PDF contained in my manual for ATF level check

ATF Fluid Level Fill.pdf 72.27 kB · 14 downloads

Bruce.....are the files from factorymanuals.net direct copies from GM or another aftermarket source?  I wonder how they compare to the GM link provided by sno1 which appears to be files directly from GM.  not sure how much I can copy to pdf in three days!  However, I would not want files that were a third or fourth party source.

As far as I can tell, they are factory GM. What I have matches up perfectly with other GM documents.

I bought the same for my Ford F-150 and my Hyundai Santa Fe. All genuine OEM documents.

Here is a similar picture of what Epsilon posted earlier in this thread:

Have you tried this https://www.gmparts.com/technical-resources/service-repair-manuals website yet?  It's only $22 for three days.  Can do a lot of copying or printing in 3 days.

Paper manuals usually aren't available until a vehicle has been out a few years and then they are usually around $300 - $600.

I have not tried the GM online manual (yet) but I have used the Honda online manual and it is identical to the paper manual.  I am very glad these online manuals are available, so much cheaper.
