My "free" 30 days onstar has expired so my nav has stopped working. I am tech challenged so the manuals instructions on how to keep it working are Greek to me. Do I have to continue the onstar subscription? There is reference to a Google account but how does one sign up for that (and what does it cost)? Anyone have instructions for dummies?

No, plug in your IPhone or android based phone and use the map applications on the phone… they are free and superior to Onstar or a gps only device

They are "free" with what ever you are paying monthly for your phone.... Not superior though because the 23's and 4's are Google so Google maps is Google maps..

Once you plug in your phone to CarPlay, you can choose any map app which is CarPlay enabled… this means Apple Maps, Google maps, Mapquest, Waze

Also, if you so desire, OnStar sells an App only data package that allows all the apps (including Google Maps) on your Chevy to still update/use data. CarPlay is the way to go if you want to keep it free.

Does not make sense to pay Onstar for internet data access when you have internet via your phone carrier on your phone. The CarPlay apps  on your phone be they Apple based or Android based will work just fine through your vehicle…without Onstar.

Thank you every one for the replys. Now the dumb question, how does the map data get from the phone to the navigation system? Cable connection? Phone pairing with the vehicle? Some form of black magic?

If you do not already have one, purchase a spare charging cable for your Apple or Android based phone.

In your vehicle system settings, enable carplay if not already enabled.

Plug your phone into the appropriate port on your vehicle console.

You may need to pair or sync your phone with your vehicle (also in your vehicle settings)

 

Once connected to the vehicle, if you hit the home button on the vehicle console (icon  of a house on my vehicle), you should see the magic happen.   All apps which are carplay enabled (such as mapping apps and some weather apps) will be available.   Zoom use to be enabled, but too many doofuses thought they could drive and participate in a zoom meeting at the same time.....

Enjoy the Android auto and Apple carplay now because GM will soon be going to subscription only formats and these will no longer be possible.

And THAT will be the last nail in the coffin for GM…. Sounds like something the “BUYDEMS” would do!….  Then I will just use the turn by turn navigation on my phone with the phone on speaker and give a big PHQUE 2 to GM and all its products.

 

First encountered CarPlay on my wife’s Santa Fe…if Hyundai would make a full size pickup, I would buy it…

I never have used vehicle navigation. First garman then my phone when it became available. It just seemed always easier. Same with entertainment I use my phone and Bluetooth. My old truck I just bought a blue tooth speaker. The sound quality rivals any fancy stereo.

I agree… if GM manages to pull this boneheaded subscription move off, what is next… a subscription to plug your phone into your vehicle to charge it, because the phone also charges while connected to the vehicle via CarPlay?    Utter asinine bovine scatology on the part of GM.

This has nothing to do with political parties and ideas.    

 

GM is just trying to play the same game as the German automakers and all of the other subscription based items (TV, apps, heck you can subscribe to deodorant and soap shipments).  The luxury Euro automakers are trying to force on subscriptions to added HP on EVs, heated seats, cooled seats, just about anything they think they can try.  

 

Its just another form of revenue for them that sadly a vast majority of American consumers have fallen trap to.  The only way subscription based culture goes away is for the masses to wake up to the BS that comes from that culture and stop paying for it.  TV for example, has gone from paying 1 company $200/mo for internet and 1000 channels with "nothing to watch" to having 6 subscription services with "nothing to watch" that you are still paying for just internet at probably $60-90/mo plus each service being $10-15/mo.  

 

Proof of this "shock to the system" at GM?  Starting for 2025 model year GM is including 8 years of free OnStar connected services so things like the remote phone app and Google built in functions (nav being one) will work from day one for 8 years.  Now, will they raise MSRP by the $1200 worth of service they are "including"?  Sure, but the subscription factor of it won't be there. 

 

So TLDR, its American consumers which are responsible for this big subscription based push.

It is way more political than you care to admit.  A generation of minds full of mush have been indoctrinated to hate the USA and are complictly involved in creating chaos.

 

Consumables are one thing... and I do not subscribe to them either.

 

People who are paying $200 for internet service, you are beyond all help and deserve to be parted with their $$$.

 

Nor am I one who will purchase a brand new truck, then start chopping it to pieces with a lift kit, additional speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers and then turning to this forum because all of the gremlins which surface in the operation of their vehicle because of it.... but it is their vehicle and they are free to do whatever they wish...

 

The notion GM wants  to imitate the Europeans is further proof of their idiocy.

 

Here is an idea... go back to making a quality vehicle... second to none... not a luxury vehicle... a quality vehicle which people want to buy.... not the gubermint mandated EV crap which is more destructive to the environment and the pocket book than any ICE or hybrid.

My grandparents legally immigrated from Europe and never looked back.  My grandfather said we are in America now, we are Americans... "here we speaka da English".  The only time he slipped back into his native tongue was when he got mad and my grandmother would quickly cut him off by stating "English!!!".

So again to the boneheads at GM   PHQUE 2.   Will see if their plan continues to exist after 2025

Its called a revenue stream. they have been talking about it for a few years now. The same way they license the Dexos and Dexcool  certifications. I love a good Government conspiracy as much as anyone but this component of the GM story doesnt have any. By your own admission you say you arent buying a new truck so why would GM care what your preferences are ? 

I will however argue that its cultural and the more people become dependent on tech the more companies will leverage that for revenue. Personally I dont use Google maps, it has screwed me over more times than I can type. If I am going to a state or area I am unfamiliar with I order a paper map and add it to my collection. I can still drive a manual trans, change a tire and write in cursive too.
