Just brought a 2017 sierra with <20,000 miles. Live and bought in the north east. Some rust is obviously to be expected, and sat a fair amount, but want to know how bad this is and if/what options are to mitigate or minimize rust.

Brush off loose rust & coat with fluid film or Blaster Surface Shield.

If it was me I would clean the frame then spray it with implement spray paint to get it back to black. Then apply the fluid film of choice.

Clean it as good as you can and shoot it with Black Fluid film or similar product. 

I think the prep work for paint would be significant and based on my experiences over the years the paint wont hold up.
