Looking for help. I bought a used 2010 Sierra. Only has one key. I'd like to get a key fob and program myself if possible to save some money. There is no driver information center and when I push them odometer stem, programming new remotes does not appear. Made me think that originally the truck was not equipped with keyless entry. However when I lock the truck for the night and use the key manually to re-enter, the alarm goes off until I start the truck. Does this mean I have to go to a locksmith to program new fob? Is there a sequence of cycling the key then holding buttons etc. etc...to program? Any help would be appreciated.

Go to local Ace hardware, they can fix you up with a key and programming. I paid 100.00 for a programmed key. best price around.

Most bi-directional scan tools can handle this. Outside of that, you can try the steps below ... but if this doesn't work, a locksmith visit will be money very well spent, rather than the excruciating headache you'll have getting nowhere fast. 

 

Common DIY Programming Method for GMT900 (2007–2014) Key Fobs

This works for many standard remote keyless entry (RKE) fobs on these trucks (often with a separate metal key). It's based on reliable sources like owner manuals and user videos/reports.

  1. Close all doors and ensure the vehicle is in a safe, well-lit area.
  2. Insert a working (already programmed) key into the ignition.
  3. Turn the key to the ON/RUN position (do not start the engine; accessories power on).
  4. If your truck has a DIC (info screen on dash):
    • Use the info/trip buttons to navigate until "Relearn Remote Key" or "Press V to Relearn Remote Key" appears.
    • Press and hold the reset/set button (or checkmark) until "Remote Key Learning Active" shows.
  5. On the new/unprogrammed key fob, press and hold the Lock and Unlock buttons simultaneously for about 10–15 seconds (or until the vehicle responds with a beep, horn chirp, or doors cycle lock/unlock).
  6. Repeat for additional fobs if needed (the vehicle often stays in learn mode for a short time).
  7. Turn the ignition OFF to exit programming mode.
  8. Test the fob: Lock/unlock doors, panic button, etc.
  • Tips: Have at least one working fob/key already. If no response, try cycling the ignition On/Off a few times first or check battery in the new fob.
  • For some 2007–2010 models without DIC, a simpler method applies: Cycle the door unlock button while turning key On/Off rapidly (On-Off-On-Off), then hold Lock+Unlock on fob until doors cycle.
  • Important note: Transponder chip in the key (for starting the engine) may require separate programming in some cases — often needs two working keys or dealer/locksmith for security relearn (e.g., 30-minute wait procedure). The remote functions (lock/unlock) are usually separate and easier.

Variations and Cautions

  • Earlier GMT900 (2007–2010): Often fully DIY with the above steps.
  • Later (2011–2014): Some require a scan tool or dealer visit for full sync, especially if replacing lost fobs or if it's push-button/proximity style (less common on GMT900).
  • If your truck is not GMT900 (e.g., 2014+ new body style or 2019+), the process differs significantly — many newer ones require dealer programming or specific tools/apps, and DIY is limited or impossible for security reasons.

hit a junkyard and get the DIC button panel.  Your truck already has the plug for it, you just pull off your existing trim panel w/o the buttons, and plug the harness into the dic buttons and then you have dic.

Has an actual GM tech answered the question?

 

I am not a GM tech but have been through this circus on a few different GM vehicles.

 

Below is a video that explains the process without DIC buttons. Is this the same cluster you have?

 

Doors must be closed and vehicle must be in "on" key position (as far forward as key will go without starting truck) in order to access the relearn option by pressing the trip odometer reset stem.

Seems pretty straightforward...if the menu option isn't available, it's likely the truck was never equipped with keyless entry. Is there an aftermarket alarm installed in the truck that could be causing it to go berserk when you open the door?

 

To be sure if your truck was equipped with keyless entry from the factory, you'll need to find the sticker that lists all the RPO/option codes. Uh...if I remember on these, it's still on a sticker in the glove box? AU0 or AP8 is Remote Entry Lock Control or Remote Entry system. AU3 is power door locks.

GM also removed the ability to self program fobs at some point on that generation as well.  My 2012 was not capable of it, but 07-08, some had the feature.  Not sure if a 2010 would have it.

 

First off, you have to have the right starting options in the truck to begin with.  If you don't have power locks, you won't be able to add a key fob.  Base/WT trucks, you can add in the DIC button if you want, and if it unlocks programming ability you can do that, or easiest way without doing that is a bi-directional scan tool.

I didn't know they ever built a 900-series truck without power everything.  Unless there was a W/T 900-series? I can't remember ... but I don't recall ever seeing one.

 

Would be kind of pointless having a fob with manual locks, lol.

I think the more likely scenario would be having power locks but remote keyless entry being an option on more basic trucks.

 

Pretty sure there was a WT trim in 2010 on the Sierra..

No.  That wasn't possible.  Had to have power locks to either add or have come with fobs.

Yes.  WT trims with no boxes checked had manual locks and manual windows.  You could option them all in though.  There was the "Windows, Locks and Mirrors Power Package" and there was an SEO free-flow RPO called 5B5 that would let you get them as well.  Neither package came with the fobs though, had to purchase those after the fact.

    • Looking up on the web you can the information that would seem obvious. You asked engine components to do more. You get more wear. The answer is they can last just as long but required more maintenance. Apparently having to change lifters, cam and associated components are maintenance or repairs. In some research the normal life span of valve train components are 80-100 miles with 3-5K miles oil change. So the next logical conclusion would be cost per mile. I use that analogy with my wife all the time with vehicles. My Odyssey is approaching 170K. The cost per mile will go up at 200K with maintenance. Looking at a low cost car. A K-4 with a 10-10 warranty. Selling my Ridgeline that’s about to hit the same maintenance milestone. My argument becomes not only I get worry free driving. But at no cost increases. Because I take the money from my Ridgeline and maintenance savings and other potential savings. I’m driving for free. So tying it with a bow. It makes you wonder. Is this a grand conspiracy by the auto makers? Raise the potential maintenance high enough. Buyers by extended warranty to 100K miles. Do the minimum maintenance required. Trade in at the warranty end. How long should they last? That question is what keeps people up at night. The answer is much more complicated than it used to be.
    • Could you cite your source on this?  I cannot find any reference to the US secretly taking the oil.  I find references that the US helped oil tankers move through the Strait of Hormuz, but nothing about what you're stating.

    • No leaks. Replaced the condenser 3 years ago. Problem was found to be caused by the A/C blend door actuator. Just replaced it and it's blowing out the cold air it used to when I bought it.
