22 Chev 2500HD 6.6 gas will have "engine oil hot" alarm and code when towing

Hey all, thanks for the advice.  I have a 22 Chev 2500 with a 6.6 and a 22 GMC 2500 with a 6.6.  The GMC has been used for towing (5-12K lbs) for its entire life (140K miles) so far and no issues.  The Chev (105K miles) for some reason will flash the "engine oil hot" code when towing, even a 3K lb trailer.  it is generally when going up a hill but will happen on the flats when pushing against the wind.  We do check the oil and add some every 1-2K miles or so.  We have had this issue since it was new, but did not need to tow with it, so just ignored it (I do realize that i should have pressed the issue with the dealer before the warranty was up, not smart, i know).   We are not loosing coolant, use the same oil in both engines, always use tow/haul mode, and the coolant temp stays steady.  So, wondering if there are any ideas?

What viscosity oil are you using? What is the coolant temp when this occurs?

It’s been doing it for 100k miles? Why worry now lol

 

first things that come to mind would be bad engine coolant temp sensor, oil cooler or a cooling fan clutch issue . 
 

buy it never overheats? So what do you do when the message comes on? What makes it go away ?

Thanks, Yah, it says "engine oil hot", the audible arlarm comes on and sometimes i need to pull over to get it to stop but the coolant temp is steady.  Which is odd.  I intend to spend part of a day troubleshooting, any advice would be welcome.  I will hook up a trailer and document what i can, to see if our local techs can figure something out.  The reason that I am finally looking into it is that I want to sell it with a clear concience.

Try changing the pressure and temp sensor.  Its the one that's on the oil cooler lines at the oil pan, top of the block that the lines are a part of.

 

12698766 is the sensor.  

 

If nothing changes after that, then I'd say you've got a restriction in the oil cooler which is a part of the radiator.

We are using 5W30 full synthetic in both the 22 Chev and 22 GMC.  The GMC still burns oil but has no problem towing in much more difficult conditions.  It has been a while, so I am planning to do some test drives and document the temps.  Thanks!!

I will do a double check on the history, i think we have changed the sensor once already.  I will make a note reagarding the cooler.  Thank You!

If you had or bought an OBD-II monitor that can show engine oil temp, you might get a better idea of what's going on.

I use a Scangauge II, which for the L8T (at least for 2024, you should check with the monitor support) has:

Engine oil temp can be displayed on the 22  I have used the sg2 on mine and now a sg3.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will definately track the Eng Oil Temp when we test it.
