another Theftlock question

I have searched the posts concerning Theftlock and the radios in GM trucks.

While the posts have answered some questions, they raise others so I ask those far more learned and experienced than I for additional help.

I have a 2001 Sierra that I purchased used recently. The light beside the volume control does not flash. This indicates to me that the Theftlock is not enabled. Being that this is a used truck I do not know if the previous owner ever activated the Theftlock and what the secret code would be if he did.

I tried the procedure of holding preset buttons 2 and 3 in for approx 10 sec but I did not get a response. I tried this with the radio on and off. Can I assume from this that original owner never activated it? Is it safe to install my own code or am I just asking for a headache and a trip to the dealer?

It is safe to enter your own code. If you got no response with the code retreival, it was not set to begin with.

Thanks for the reply. The radio displayed --- so I understand that the Theftlock had neve been activated. I installed a code per the owners manual and bingo the red light comes on . Went out and did a little shopping and noticed that red light blinking as it should until I started the truck. Everything working...until this morning. Started the truck this morning and the radio displayed LOC.

My battery is in fine shape so what happened? Any ideas?

Sounds like the radio lost power at some point. Did you lose your presets? That might have been the reason the code was cleared out before. You probably want to start by checking the connections at the back of the radio. It is possible that the previous owner had an aftermarket radio in. I have seen many preowned vehicles with butchered up radio harnesses. Could be just a loose connection on the ground or the constant power lead.

One thing I have learned is to not question the 'tron gods. I downloaded as much info as I could to find out why I was locked out of my radio. When I got home to attack it that afternoon all was well . Didn't touch a thing.

Everything works and continues to. Have tried getting off the beaten path to shake things up a bit but everything still works (knock on wood)

I'll try not to tempt fate too much.

Every GM truck that i've owned that had Theftlock has locked me out of the radio several times and they never could figure out why. My '02 SD has done it three times so far.
