Next week sometime. If I buy it it will be my first diesel (in a pickup anyway).

Anything in particular I need to look out for?

I don't really know of anything in particular that you should look for. I would ask people with HDs that have the engine. If you buy it, get pics. I have only seen one in person.

You might as well ask in HD, as before the Duramax, the 6.5 was the only diesel they had. Also, check out www.thedieselpage.com .

J-U-N-K, I've never seen one that runs good, the only good diesels from that time period are teh Cummins and teh Powerstroke, Chevy didn't get good diesels until the 6.6 came out

You did not lok very hard because I have seen A LOT of them run good. The 6.5 was and still is a great engine. They had some injector pump issues but all diesel have pump issues sometime in their life and poor fuel quality can shorten pump life. I know a guy how hauls a big skid loader all over every day (about 9000lb total trailer weight) and for several years he towed it with a 6.5 and never missed a job. He traded it in on a Duramax less than one year after they came out and blew two engines in the first year. Yes he is hard and them and has a heavy foot but the 6.5 stayed together while the 6.6 did not.
