03 silverado..stuck with receiver deck?

Recommended Posts

hello all,

i purchased my silverado last may(03).

i recently went to have xm installed and was

told that the deck cannot be removed because

it also controls..1)air bags 2)dome lights 3)running lights

4)door chime.

the dealer was less than helpful(thanks for nothing...again, dick genthe)

now, i can still get xm but, i have to keep the stock deck(which sucks)

and, i'll have to have a xm deck stuck on my dash.

sorry for the rant but, what the hell is gm thinking?

the dealership told me that it is gm's way of cutting out the "aftermarket" guys.

uh, HELLO!! who's your customer here?!

i also was told that, "hey, next time you upgrade you can get xm stock".

uh, i shelled out 30 gr for THIS truck, i'm not concerned with my next purchase.

anyone have a better answer than GM?

THANKS,

I can't imagine what the deck would have to do with the airbags, dome light or running lights. The door chime, yes. My '03 Yukon had the Bose system and the door chime rings through the speakers. I replaced my head with a Sony and put in the door chime adapter. I'm good to go.

You can also go with an XM radio with an FM modulator. It basically interfaces between the radio antenna.

I've even seen some with wireless modulators, so they don't even have to be connected to the radio at all.

I have an FM modulator 10 cd disk changer on my Vette, and it sounds great.

As mentioned, the radio just governs the door chimes, and warning chimes. There are lots of options and adapters available, depending on your budget. If the budget is "wealthy", you can buy the XM receiver and use your existing radio, just as if you had purchased the XM option with the truck:

>> and, i'll have to have a xm deck stuck on my dash. <<

Man, that is some AWFUL information. At the beginning, there was a kit that would install a wiring junction so you could have your chimes. An aftermarket radio would go off on one side of the junction, and your original radio on the other side. All would be right with the world. Terrible design, but it worked. Finally, manufacturers came on board and started making some nice wiring adapters and the need for the OEM head unit was no longer done.

In my case, I purchased a Pioneer 6600 head unit, and a wiring harness adapter that has its own chime speaker. The chimes don't stay on FOREVER, either. They time out after only 15 seconds. Handy when you want to listen to the radio with the door open.

Anyway, dig around and search this board. There are a LOT of messages dealing with replacing the OEM head unit for '03 models and upwards.

And, as one of the messages mentioned, you can add XM to your existing radio via an RF modulated hookup that is part of the XM receiver. Nearly all the major radio manufacturers have models and, in the case of Pioneer, the RF Modulator is very powerful, very clean. Has hardly any audio frequency artifacting like most other modulators.

And, as another resource that can help you is http://www.xmfan.com/ Very easy to trace the evolution of XM in these late model vehicles of ours.

And tell your dealer to stuff it.... he is horribly misinformed. Shame on him for telling you this line of his.

Also GM came out last week with a kit that you can install factory XM in an 03-04 Pickup or SUV. IT's pretty pricey though, cost about $360 I think but for factory look and integration, I think it would be worth it.

cdn111,

Can you elaborate on this new GM option? I want to add it to my Bose system and was probably going to go with the soundgate/pioneer 910? tuner but if I can use GM parts would like to check that out. Where did you see this?

Thanks

If somebody else doesn't beat me to it, I'm gonna check with our parts department Monday and get ALL the details on installing factory XM hardware for plug-and-play with our existing GM radios. I've been considering installing factory XM in my '04 Sierra for a few weeks, but have been too busy to get the details. While we haven't done it yet for any of our customers, I'm 99% sure it will work, and so do the majority of our technicians that I've thrown the idea at(just one of those things we haven't dealt with yet). I've got the Bose system, but not the 6-Disc CD Radio.

Am curious and we have been through this before, but I just want to see it again, hoping someone will say, NOT TRUE. Ok, here goes: does the factory OEM radio display for XM satellite display only EIGHT characters? Does it scroll, or is the song title, author name, etc., truncated. Or, if the word is over eight characters, does it wrap to a second line?

Posted

cdn111,

Thanks for posting this info. Does that 12/31/04 date mean that you have to get it before then or else it is no longer offered?

You also mentioned about getting them below list, what kind of price are you talking about? Also will a local dealer install it and do the radio programming if not bought from them? Lastly does that include the XM antenna and installation for that?
