I've been thinking about becoming a volunteer....what all is invloved as far as training and such.... I have a full time job and a wife, that I can't exactly leave to goto training for a month or whatever.....I guess I am just looking for some basic info that I'm sure one of you guys can give.

my training is 6-10 tues. and thurs. and also 8-5 on saturdays. this goes on every week until march 31st. now alot of studying comes into play as well as homework. with a full time job and a wife, you'll be pushing it.

I am a volunteer for Cy-Fair VFD in Northwest Houston. Things may be different where you are but when I joined just over a year ago now, my "Cadet Class" was only 10 weeks long. We met twice a week from 6-10pm and every saturday from 8am-5pm. Now that I am out of cadet class, we have station meetings every Thursday night from 7-10pm for training. When the pager goes off, if available you respond to the station and get on the fire truck. Other than that there is the occasional Public Relations event, outside training on a weekend, or station get-togethers. Each quarter we are required to get 18 points and points are received for each meeting attended, training, call gone on, PR attended, etc. All in all, I love it. It really doesn't take up that much time, the guys at the station are great, and where else can you put lights and sirens on your personal vehicle.

Another volunteer here. We have continous training on Monday nights, and every 3 weeks or so on weekends have some kind of live fire exercise or car extraction, etc. I really enjoy it, I just wish I was home more often to do more of it.
