Hi Im new to this Forum and i have a problem with my 02 Yukon XL 1500 5.3. I think the Ref Diff Is busted becuase when i shift into drive in 2WD the truck doesent move and is making a loud grinding noise as well. Also when this happens the spedo shoots up as if the truck was moving. The only way i can drive it is if i Put it in 4wd. Is this a Transmission problem or a rear Diff problem?

Rear diff or transfer case problem. If the speedo is going up, the tranny is spinning the output shaft which goes directly to the transfer case. My suggestion would be to jack it up on stands and watch underneath as somebody puts it into 2wd Drive. If the rear driveshaft is spinning and the rear wheels are not, rear diff is the problem. If the rear driveshaft does not spin, problem likely in transfer case. My guess would be rear diff before xfer case problem as they seem to go MUCH more often.

If you are REAL trusting of another person AND your truck, crawl under it without jacking it up and check the driveshaft. Chances of getting run over are A LOT higher with this method though

So what did you do with your truck to break something like this?  I beat the heck out of mine, tow more than I should, and changed the fluid at 130k and the tech said it looked great!

Exactly What you did. But I dont think the Transfer case Fluid has ever been changed.

And the Truck will Drive in 4wd. I think the Problem started when The Rear Diff would stay loced on me sometimes and it would not go into reverse easily. Menaing shifting into reverse would be like shifiting into netural.

I lost the rear end in my OBS 1500. It was the G80 locker and it did the same thing. Acted up a little and then snaped completely. Come to find out it had teeth broken off for some time and it only took a little strain to snap some more and throw it out. I would check it, but not by jacking it up and laying under it. Take it to a place that has a hoist. Hoist it up so that it is just off the ground safely(about 6-8 inches). Now have somebody start it and put it in gear. Check underneath to see if the rear driveline is spinning or not. If it is not you know it is in your transfer case and not the rear end.

Whats the Easiet way to fix this Problem. I saw on ebay they have the 4.10 Rear End Diff's for like 76.00. Is that all i need to replace? Check it out. The Yukon XL 1500 is a 10 Bolt rear Correct?

That add says 4.11. You had better make sure what ratio it is before you buy. Also, I did not think the 4.10 rear was available on the tahoe. Remember if you change the gear ratio in the rear diff you have to change the front diff also or you will have a s*&tstorm of problems then.
