Usually around 50,000 miles or so.  Just check it for cracks and signs of wear.

The reason that it's squeaking is becuase water's getting on the belt and causing it to slip, you may want to adjust the belts tension as well.

I got a new one for my 96 chevy truck when it had 30K miles but did not install it till it had about 60K miles. It did not break but was 3 yrs old and had some cracks on it. Just buy one have in the truck for emergency. When you get about 50-60K miles change it and save the old one for emergency. Everything runs on one belt so if it breaks you won't get very far!!

I was in a rainstorm when mine went out..voltage dropped, no power steering and the temperature begins to rise very quickly. Luckily I was 1/2 a mile from my house. If there's any signs of wear or funny noises, may as well just change it. They're cheap and take about 3 minutes to put on. They do normally last 50K miles or so, but it probably depends on the conditions it is exposed to and manufacturer of the belt.

Funny part is, mine was only a few months old when it went. I think it didn't have enough tension, because the tensioner was near the very end of its rotational limit, and the new one was about an inch longer than the old one. If you plan on doing this yourself, when you get the old one off, compare them to make sure the parts guy got you the right one. Mine just jumped the A/C pulley up onto the compressor bolt and started dragging and burning/shredding itself. Any signs of that one all-important belt wearing and I would change it just for peace of mind. Keep the old for a backup is definately a good idea just in case. My old one is what got me to the parts store to get another new one..the right length this time.
