Q#1:

The front pinion shaft is leaking gear lube, can I pull the yoke and replace the seal or is there more to it than that? Am I going to have to set the backlash again?

Q#2:

How much free play should the front driveshaft have in it? There is about 1/4 to 1/2 rotation of the driveshaft when the vehicle is in park and the 4WD system not engauged.

Anyone?

Thanks,

Wendell

I looked into the front pinion shaft a while ago, I don't remeber it being to difficult, just pull the shaft and unbolt the thingy the shaft mounts too on the diff, slide it out and remove the old and install the new seal. Then button it back up. Thats the simplified what I remember version. There was lots of debate on the second question That I won't get into.

Bad news. The front diff is shot. What are the pitfalls to changing this out? I need to know asap as I bought a front diff (used) already and will start the process this weekend. I have 3.73's in the back and I bought the front out of a 94 with 3.73's in it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You need to talk to a mechanic that knows gearsets/differentials. This is no job for a shadetree mechanic. There are torque settings for everything, and if your yoke nut is not torqued correctly you will have alot more than seal problems in the future.

I'm changing out the WHOLE unit, not the gears or bearings, the whole thing.

Any help here?

I see now. My cousin changed the front axle on his 88 by himself. He said it was fairly straightforward. He just disconected the driveshaft via the U-joint and unbolted the axle. He said the CV joints were a little tricky. I helped him hook the actuator back up. He used his old one because the used axle's had been robbed. That took ten minutes to bolt on and plug in. Just keep your post active and usually some one will chime in with a full PM and maybe pictures for this repair.

It looks straight forward, the unexpected part is the removal of the inner tie rod to the ...something something something. Other than that it looks like 8 hours book time.

I'll repost after I complete the job.
