Newbie - H.D. Auxiliary Battery

Recommended Posts

Hi All :

Actually, I don't even qualify as a *Newbie* yet, since I won't be putting in my truck order until next week.  So, perhaps *Soonbie* is more accurate.

I'm putting together the specs for my next work truck, and would like ideas and opinions about some options.

To start with, how does GM set up the Heavy Duty Auxiliary Battery feature?

Plugging the appropriate adaptors into one or both of the power ports in the dash, I hope to run a lap-top computer, a control switching system for some geo-tech diagnostic equipment that I will be operating from the bed of the truck, and maybe a CB radio (at various times; not necessarily all at once).

With the motor NOT running, does anyone know if the power ports are configured so as to draw from the H.D. Aux. Battery first - instead of from the primary battery?

That is, is there a built-in isolator somewhere in the line connecting the two batteries and the power ports?

The H.D. Aux Battery is an option that I might add on if it won't drain the main battery through those power ports.

Thanks to all.  I've been lurking on this forum for awhile, and you guys are great.  I know little about trucks - I just drive 'em -  but I've learned a lot from reading all the terrific posts here.

I'm not too sure on how the HD battery set up is, but I just thought I'd say welcome to the forum.  Some one else here might now a little more about the trucks electrical system.

I do know that on my silverado the three on board 12 volt adapters aren't the greatest.  The one that actually has the lighter works well, but the other two blow a fuse when I try to use my 12 volt air compressor.

TUNA,  I think your outta luck

(as many others have been). I

think GM still has the hold up on

the dual battery option.....Check

www.wheels.com

They show all the production hold

ups for all mfrs....Don't let the

dealer BS you.................Geo

Thanks all for welcoming me to this forum. It feels good to get on the team.  NewbieZ71, DigUout, chevy4x4trucks (hey, even silverado man, who *no like nobody*) --  you guys, and all the other helpful and friendly posters, are why I signed up here.  Also, the fact that activating cookies isn't necessary to log in.

sonjaab :  I followed your wheels.com link to http://www.wheels.com/reference/referenceFrame.htm

and they are not currently showing a hold-up on the H.D. Aux. Battery option.  But I do recall a problem to that effect last fall, so maybe it's a bottleneck that comes and goes.  As for you saying not to let the dealer BS me about this - yeah! write on, bro.  Whatever the salesman tells me, I confirm it on my own.  Appreciate yours and everyones help with these sorts of questions.

gandolphxx :  Thanks heaps for the link to ;  http://www.off-road.com/chevy/reviews/wranglerdb/.  I clicked through to the Wrangler site as well, and that looks like a great, high-quality product.  At $295.00 they're asking for more than double what GM wants for the H.D. battery option, but it's pretty clear from the info. in that link that you get well over double in value. I am continuing to research this issue.

Another Soonbie.

Yeah, as we all probably know, doing your homework before going in is always good.  I used to love going to the dealer's and knowing more about the trucks than the sales people...they always seemed to use lines like, "I usually don't sell the trucks", etc...

No joke...  My wife and I were in Best Buy this weekend, and I stopped in to look at the new Sony DVD player (silver, cool clear top, can be mounted vertical, flat, whatever)...

There were no obvious jacks on the back, so I asked the salesman if he could take it out of it's "lockdown bracket" so I could really check it out.  He said he wasn't allowed to but would answer any questions I had.  I asked what kind of connections it had, and he said, "Video and audio".  Thanks, dude..

I asked what kind of digital audio out it had and he said "None--just L/R".  Not believing this, I told him I couldn't believe that a $300 DVD player would only have 2-channel audio output, and that I'd look it up when I got home.  We were leaving the department when he came back to say "Hey, I got some info for you."  Curious, we followed him to his sales terminal where he had--get this--the BestBuy web page up comparing this player to another one.  He showed me the various "specs" and we left.

Geez, I don't need someone to show me how to surf!  And I wouldnt' believe BestBuy's pages anyway--I'd go to the mfr!

Oh well.  Some sales folk are just like that.

Sorry to be [/off-topic].

Ah yes...don't even get me started on Best Buy...I go there to look, that's about it.  Their return policy on cd's...can only return unopened cd's for the exact same one.  Hint...if I got the thing as a gift and it's the wrong cd, why should I be screwed??  I have other wonderful experiences there.
