This is my first pick up truck so bare with me. I have a 2004 GMC sierra ext cab 2wd. I was wondering will i damage it if i tow 2450lbs.I will also have 200 lbs of luggage and my 450 lbs motorcycle in the bed? And the three people will be roughly 550 lbs. I am running the 5.3 V8. Not sure of the axle ratio.(Where can i find that?)

That will be an easy tow for your truck.

the sticker in your glove box has the RPO codes on it, one of them is your axle ratio.

GT4 3.73

GT5 4.10

GU4 3.08

GU6 3.42

You need to look up your GCWR (gross combination weight rating). It is the maximum weight of truck,passengers,payload, trailer. It is the best way to know your trucks capabilitys.

Don't believe any thing telling you maxlmum trailer weight. The weight quoted will be without any cargo/passagers in the truck.

The GCWR for my truck was listed right in the sales broucher. It is dependent on your rear end ratio. For the 6.0 liter with 410 gears its 16000lbs.

Seems you will be well within your trucks limits.

You could do that with the 4.3 V6. That much weight isn't going to hurt that truck at all.

This is interesting because I just tried figuring mine out as I was looking at a travel trailer.

 

If you have the 3.23 rear end, you can tow 7000 lbs, if you have the 3.73, you can tow 8000 lbs, thats off their web site.

 

Now, Like stated above, you have to worry more about the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight, which is the total weight of the trailer, all your gear in your truck bed, the weight of the passengers and a full tank of fuel.

 

So lets add it all up.

 

4617 - Curb Weight of Vehicle

1583 - Max Payload

8000 - Max Towing

 

You said you have 550 lbs of people and a 450lb bike, and 200 lbs of gear.

 

Thats 1200 lbs right there, plus, if you add the weight of a full tank of gas, which should be 26 gallons at 6.25lbs a gallon, that works out to be 162.5 lbs, so now you are up to 1362.5 lbs total truck payload.

 

You still have about 220 lbs of tongue weight left for the trailer before you max out your payload rating, so you should be ok, but its better to lay it all out so you can get a feeling if you are close to the max or not.

 

If you think this is too close for your liking, you can always move some of the stuff to the trailer, cuz you have a lot more headroom with the trailer weight than the payload in the truck.

Doesn't sound like you'll have any problems. If possible, get as much stuff (not people) on/in the trailer as you can. It won't effect the combined vehicle weight but it will take payload and convert it to trailer weight which you have plenty to spare.
