Tranny Pan Recommendation

Hi All,

 

I'm taking in my 2004 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab for tranny service. The factory pan DOES NOT have a drain plug.

 

Should I go for an aftermarket aluminum or a FACTORY pre-2003 with the drain plug?

 

Any recommendation on aluminum (besides $$ Mag-HiTech)?

Don't get a GM pan.

Boy,Thats the truth,The drain plugs are put on soooooo tight on the factory pans hardly anyone can get them off

Whatever you do, get a good quality pan by TCI, B&M or any other pan by a reputable company. The cheapest I've found so far in the aluminum extra capacity models are either at www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com for $166.99 without shipping. They come with gaskets and mounting hardware and a drain plug.

I replaced my transmission fluid with AMSOIL last week on my 2004 K1500 CC. What a pain! I still do not know how to properly remove the pan because I don't know what to do with the bracket for the cable other than bend it out of the way. Anyway not having a drain plug really wasn't too much of a disadvantage as I loosened the screws a bit and let it partially drain. Then I siphoned (using a $5 siphon) the remaining bit out. Knowing now that there is really no interference next time I will just siphon through the dipstick tube.

My only concern is with the filter extension coming loose on the EXTRA CAPACITY models. For this reason I am leaning toward the STANDARD CAPACITY TCI model.

I had the TCI extra capacity aluminum pan on my 1998 K1500 with a 4L60E and loved it. It came with everything needed to change over to the new pan. The drain plug worked wonderfully. There is no filter extension needed with this pan. It uses the stock filter. There are posts cast into the bottom of the interior of the pan that support the stock filter. Some people might say that the filter does not get that fluid because it is not on the bottom of the pan but the returning fluid circulates that fluid below the filter. The extra capacity is worth it for lower transmission fluid temperatures.
