Alignment?

Recommended Posts

I just put new tires on my Suburban. The outside front of one of the old tires was more badly worn than the rest of the tire and than the other three tires. Thus, I need an alignment (I suppose I should do an alignment everytime I replace tires, if not more frequently).

What type of alignment should I get (I've heard of several types)? Also, do they need to do all four wheels or just the front ones? Finally, what's a fair price on this type of alignment.

Thanks!

A front-end alignment should cost below $50.00. I don't think the rears are adjustable (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The most important thing is to keep them rotated and balanced. I was told that Chevy puts a little extra camber in the front to help tighten the turning radius. This requires more frequent rotations.

I know in my area that Firestone/Bridgestone company stores sell a lifetime alignment product. The price is very high in excess of $100, but they will align your vehicle for as long as you own it. I guess it depends on how long you're going to keep your truck, but it might be worth checking on. Here's a link to the "premium alignment" from Firestone.

Ok - if the extra camber is built in, what should the real alignment specs be for normal to good tire wear. I ask as I have outside tire wear on my 2002 when I bought it with 25,000 miles. One alignment shop told me he sees this issue on many of the newer GM's.

Just can't see ruining tires over what is already a large turning radius. I also seem to have a general pull to the left, but since I bought used, don't know if that is also normal for GM 4X4 now or if it's the alignment or tires.

Thanks for any more disucssion

they align the front tires with the back which is a 2 wheel alignment i believe, they have 4 wheel alignments for ifs and irs cars and for the quadrasteer which is a 4 wheel alignment, also gm tie rods suck so its hard to keep the alignment spot on

How often do you guys rotate/balance? How much does it cost to rotate and balance all 4? . . . I've never had it done

There really isn't any such thing as a 2 wheel alignment any more...even if the rear is unadjustable, the front should be adjusted in relation to the rear, as the thrust angle will actually determine which way the vehicle will track. It can be done, but an off center steering wheel may be the result.
