GM trucks Vs. GM cars

Why do you guys think there is a pretty big gap in quality between GM's cars and trucks? Or do you think I am imagining this?

Personally we've owned several different GM cars throughout the years.

1973 Caddy Eldorado 8.1L

1974 Camaro Z28

1989 Chevy Astro Van

19XX Monte Carlo

1993 Grand Am 2-door

1996 Monte Carlo LS

1999 Cavalier

2000 Corvette 6-speed

2001 Camaro Z28 6-speed

 

and then..

1970 Chevy P/U

1994 Silverado 4.3

 

I'm a son in a divorsed family so these are cars owned by each parent throughout the years. These cars were all solid cars. Like every other car they have there little things when they get old, but nothing out of the ordinary. A lot of people you talk to say that the cars arn't built as well as the trucks, but I think thats true of any automaker. I'm sure the F150 is more solid than the Escort. If something happenend and I had to get out of my truck and get into a car, General Motors would be the first company I'd look at. I really like the new Impalas and I think the new Monte Carlos are pretty good looking too.

I have bought GM cars & truck for 40 years and the quality has never been better. My 04 Silverado K1500 & 04 Monti Carlo SS Supercharged havent had any problems since delivery and my 02 Silverado & Grand Prix only had one problem each. Throught the years the quality has improved 10 fold.

nope both my 00 silverado and 00 impala have the steering clunk issue

 

(however my truck has been fixed for a few yrs now but it did have the problem and I am to lazy to fix the impala i have the kit to fix it too).

but both the car and the truck had the issue. That implies that the quality was not lacking on the car.

I had a 1993 Chevy Caprice 9C1 Police Package, was the best GM vehicle I had ever owned, and the most reliable. Then when GM stopped producing the B-Body cars in 1996, I feel the reliability of GM products went down the tubes.

1993 nissan ext cab pick up,4 years and 112,000 miles. Fuel Pump (Warrenty) and clutch relay (@87,000 miles)

 

1997 Chevy 1/2 ext cab, 4 years and 98,000 miles. 2 water pumps, Steering speed sensor, Rear axle seal, inside door latch handle/latch, wiper motor, oil pan bolts that fall out, and recall for ign. wires.

 

2001 Chevy 1/2 ext cab, 4 years and 56000 miles, so far. drive shaft, 3 dist. caps and rotors, new design dist, EVAP purge solinoid, steering shaft knock, a 700 dollar brake job, pads(normal, yes) 4 rotors, e-brake shoes, lower part of inside passenger side door painted becasue of rust, oil pan bolts that fall out, recall for tail gate cables. I've never had a vehicle towed before I owned this one, Ever in 25 years of Driving.

 

I'm still drving my 94 Accord, with 215,000 miles on it, the timing belts are a pain, i've done it 4 times now, so it's not bad. I've replaced the o2 sensors, had a leak in the oil pressure sending unit and just bit the bullet on a raditor. Umm... it still has the orignal clutch in it.. I also rebuilt all 4 calipers last year at the last brake job.

 

Once I get rid of my camper, I really won't need a truck. But if replace the truck, the

Ridgeline is on the top of my list, and if Harriet the Honda ever calls it quits, it'll be another accord or a element.

Don't get me started on the reliablity of GM cars,They will go just as long as any Honda or Nissan...My 'ol '88 Corsica...230,000 miles on it and the intake or oil pan have never been off!

My dad is driving a '95 Lumina with 135,000 miles on it..No major problems,and my mom has almost 100 grand on her '96 Beretta..same thing,no problems.

I had almost 100 grand on my '99 Silverado when I traded it and NO major problems at all! (Just the steering shaft changed once at around 30,000)

All of our vehicles were bought brand new.

 

I'm sorry but I have ZERO respect for any Honda,Nissan,Toyota or Mazda.

 

sjspor,It sounds like you have had some issues with your '94 Accord,(I don't have to worry about timing belts).I'm sorry but the Ridgeline is NOT a true full-size pickup...NO V8,NO FULL-FRAME and NO LOW RANGE for the four wheel-drive system.

Your accord has seen twice as many repairs as my fathers 95 buick with about the same miles!Also comparing that to a fullsize truck is rediculas the thing is a roller skate not a truck!And about nissan trucks take a venture over to titan talk forums and go look under the 50+ pages of complaint after complaint, ive seen more buybacks in the two years ive seen a message board open then the 7 years ive spent on chevy ones!

My '95 lumina has 167,000. I had to replace the EGR valve last year and one side on the exhaust manifold. Replaced the factory alternator last month. Other than that it has never needed repairs. Engine hasn't been touched and it doesn't burn a drop of oil.

 

Had my '99 GMC for four years. Traded in at 78,000 miles for my new truck. It was in only once to replace leaking oil cooler lines (under warranty). Never had a lick of trouble with it.

 

Growing up my dad had a '71 Cutlass, '80 Cutlass, '91 Lumina, and '98 Lumina. He still has both lumina's and they are well over 100,000 miles each. None of those cars ever had to sit at a shop for repairs or repeated problems.

90,100+ miles on my '96 Olds Cutlass Supreme and still runs just as smooth as from factory. Only thing replaced was the alternator at +/- 65,000.

All of GM's were purchased new. All over 120K miles prior to trading or selling. The Caprcie wagon was over 275,000 miles, engine change at 102K from 305 to 350. There were very little problems with the 305. Basic oil leaks that were taken care of with performance Felpro gaskets.

 

Most the cars I've had did have the little interior part here and there break due to age.

Guys its like anything else. There are gonna be some GM cars that run like a top for 350k miles and then there are gonna be some GM cars that need a tranny and motor work at 50k. This is true for EVERY manufacture. Its just the nature of assembly line cars. No two cars are the same. I have a buddy who hadda 98' Silverado snigle cab/stepside like mine that needed a tranny 150k. My 94' has nearly 200k and I have ZERO tranny issues. My truck doesn't even have the 2-3 clunk I hear so much about.

 

As for the Ridgeline. The Ridgeline is definatly not a fullsize truck. The only reason why it won't that stupid Car and Driver test was because of all the biases associated with those tests. There is a reason why Honda COPIED the Av....or tried to anyhow.

 

These days its all a mater of personal preference. I love GM cars and trucks. But then I've never really had any serious trouble with them. I have a buddy with a Toyota that swears by them..again...hes had no major trouble. Peoples preferences are based on expirences that they have had during their ownership. I really don't beileve there is any one manufacture that is any better than the others.....with the exception of Mercedes Benz. German engineering and refinement is by far the best. Smoothest car I ever drove was a 2004 S430.

 

I even have a neighbor that had a 1994 Ferrari 348 Challenge. He said the car was fast as you could ever want, but had trouble with oil leaks and what not. Everyone has their story...

Yep OUMike,Just like you said...Some break-Some don't,Their all mechanical and break sometime or another
