Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 K1500 Suburban 5.7, 3:23,4L60E w/B&M RV Shiftkit,Corvette Servo,Flowmaster Delta Force Cat Back SUV 50 Series, new fuel filter, tornado fuel saver, amsoil. I am getting exhaust out, everyone is telling me change my intake filter or intake kit.............Is it worth it? I am dead against K&N, :chevy: tryed that before w/other cars and found dirt headed toward engine past the filter, if I do it want to stay w/foam filter type  ,is it worth it ?

unless your engine is really modified, the stock paper filter will flow way more air than that engine can consume. I tried an Amsoil foam filter before, they are in the same league as K&N. The Amsoil filter did two things for me, the first was to let dirt through, and the second was to make my wallet contain $50 less.

The AMSOIL foam air filter will flow more air, but is a trade off on letting more dirt through as well. I have talked to several that used the AMSOIL foam filter and some had good results and others had bad as in letting more dirt by. Each application varies.

I have the AMSOIL filter on mine and the oil analysis show the same amount of silicon (dirt) in the sample as when I ran a stock AC paper filter. Now the AMSOIL foam filter on my wifes Venture shows a slightly elevated level of silicon in her oil analysis. Nothing major in my mind but it was a little higher. You also need to make sure the entire intake system is air tight along with any possible opening to the engine like your PCV valve and any other line that pulls a vacuum.

I haven't seen any test results done so far that proved an engines distruction due to running a K&N or Foam cleanable filter or any of the other cleanable filter out on the market today. At what point will letting in a little extra dirt start to kill an engine to the point of complete failure, 20K, 100k, 200K? Yep, dirt is not a good thing, can't disagree with that. It is a trade off, air flow for efficiency. It all depends on what an individual wants. Most don't keep their vehicles long enough to make a difference, which also doen't make sense if they get the cleanable air filter to save money from purchasing paper filters.

Like I said, they do let more dirt in, my venture is proof. Just depends on what you want.
