Anybody know about installing a Auto Start system on a 2000 chevy truck

 

2wd half ton auto trans with the 4.3 ?

 

 

Any advice or tips would be great.

If your concerned about gas mileage forget about an auto starter. Especally if you have a security system.

They are really a waste of our energy resources. Just rember that we could see $5-6 a gallon next summer.

Don't listen to what he says about them they really have very little effect on your gas mileage if you don't run it for more than a few minutes. I did one on my 04 and the factory security bypass module I would suggest assuming yours has the passlock. If you have power locks I would suggest getting a audiovox prestige 996a from ebay you can pick it up and the module for under $200 and you will be very impressed with the range and all around performance with it. If you have any questions about install let me know.

Don't vehicles get better mileage and emissions when run at proper operating temperature?

 

Using a starter, especially in the winter, allows the vehicle to warm up to operating temperature before driving. Idling uses less gas than driving so it would seem that that letting the vehicle idle to operating temperature before driving saves both gasoline and reduces overall emissions.

 

Plus, you get to hop into a warm vehicle.

 

Seems like win-win to me.

You are just warming up the engine but the rest of the drivetrain is stone cold. You are easier on your vehicle just starting it and driving it slow. Next winter when gas is $5 a gallon and diesel is $6 you will decide to save your fuel. Energy is going to get very costly. There is only so much oil and thats it.

It's funny how gas was predicted to hit, say in our area, $5 a gallon. It got to almost 3 and now it's been dropping like a rock lately. The idea of a remote start is not so that the engine will be running when you get to your vehicle. They run for a few minutes then shut off so it's not like it's idling for a half an hour or so. Besides, who cares how I spend my money?

 

As far as only so much oil, everyone who's on this board now and their children's children will be long dead and gone before we use up every drop of oil, so I'm not worried in the least.

 

In the US and Canada, we have over 3 trillion barrels of oil in sand shale. Three trillion barrels. There is also a process developed by the Germans in the early part of the last century that refines gas from coal. It's estimated that there are over 1000 billion tons of that stuff.

A remote starter only saves me from going out to start my truck and then going back inside while it warms up. (most of the time). I just about always wrm my truck up before driving it.

 

And we have oil in Alaska, We will be drilling more there soon. Politics, politics, politics!

yea ill pay the 50 cents for the gas i burn or hell even the 3 $ if I dont have to go outside and freeze my ass off while i start my vehilce

 

 

it takes 5 minutes for the coolant to war up enough to heat the cab and im willing for spend 3$ each day so i dont have to freeze for 5 minutes

 

Is there any problem with putting these on?

OK, I'll throw my $.02 in...I have put remote starters in my '95 K1500 and my wifes '00 Grand Am, I've also installed them in 3 of my past vehicles (mine and my wifes). If you do the Installation yourself, I strongly recommend SOLDERING ALL OF THE CONNECTIONS. The type of system you purchase will also dictate the way the unit is installed. Both my present and past units have been manufactured by DesignTech. Installation of them was fairly straight-forward, however the by-pass module for the VATS on th '00 Grand Am gave me a few issues, mainly 'cause I wasnt reading the directions right. DesignTech also has a unit w/the anti-theft by-pass built in. Here's a LINK to their websitew,which also has a good amount of info on installation help which also may help w/other makes,by the way.

 

As far as FUEL CONSUMPTION.....YES, it does affect my mileage by about 1-2mpg, depending on how long I let them idle. 15min max on my p-up and 10min. max on the car.....but in the middle of winter when the temp. is @ or around 0`F. a warm engine and tranny far outweighs the cost of the extra fuel I burn. Warm oils flow better, thus less friction and my tranny reacts better also. Oh, and I run synthetic fluids year round. Some of the worst wear in an engine and tranny occurs if you drive away before the fluids are flowing.

The manual says that warming up your car for the engine's sake is not needed anymore. In fact, it is better to drive it than let it idle. We have better technology these days:)

TRUE, but they also tell you that you dont have to change your oil for 6,000 mi. and your spark plugs for 100,000mi.

Ok you will need the DB-PASS-23A bypass module for the ignition. As far as install I would check for a full wiring diagram on the internet its not needed but it makes your life easier. If your located in colorado I would put it in for ya but probably not. So firgure it will take you all of a day depending on your electrical know how. If you are good at soldering by all means best way to go. I personally perfer taping in w/a razor blade and twisting and electrical tape and some zip ties incase I ever decide to pull it off but that is a personal choice there. If you would like I can give you the guy I got mine from and his responce time was quite impressive to me but if you have any questions feel free to ask.

If your driving a full size truck, I'm sure that you didn't buy it for fuel economy reasons, hence that shouldn't be an issue.

I got an UltraStart model, works great and remote is similar to factory remote. It cost 149 and another 59 for the bypass unit. Had a GM dealer install who also sold it, therefore avoiding any issues arising where they could blame the remote start if other electrical issues came up at a later time.
