Engine/Tranny combination question

On the obs (88-98) 1500 series trucks that came from the factory with the 6.5 turbo diesel, did they have the 4L60-E or the 4L80-E. I know the 2500/3500s all had the 4L80-E or nv 4500, but what about the 1500s?

I don't have the answer, but I'm sorry for deleting your topic earlier. I accidently deleted the one with the post in it, rather than the duplicate thread...

The 6.5 Turbo came out in 1992 so anything from 88-91 would have been the 6.2 diesel. I know when the 6.2 was in service it came in the 1/2 tons but I thought the 6.5 turbo was only used in the 2500-3500 series. I don't ever recall seeing a 6.5 turbo in a 1/2 ton, although I think they made a naturally aspirated 6.5 for the 1/2 ton trucks and vans.

I'm not quite sure on the tranny, but I know they were offered in the half tons in 94. My buddy's parents had two of them. One was a K1500 ext cab short bed and the other a Blazer. They were both turbos. Ironically they both were the same color, I think it was called Autumnwoods Brown. The Blazer was a monster in 4WD with the torquey diesel. We took it to the Moab Jeep Safari one spring, and it krept over the slickrock with ease.

I wasn't sure on the 6.5 turbo in 1/2 tons, but now that you mention it I checked and found that the 6.5 turbo in the 1/2 ton trucks was a detuned version of the engine that was in the 2500-3500 series. I can't remember the horsepower rating between the two(there was a difference) but I think the torque was 360 ft. lbs in the 1/2 ton and 395 ft. lbs in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. :banghead:

Ah, that would most likely mean the GM ran the 4L60-E in the 1500s with the 6.5td. The reason that I was wondering, is that I know a few people who have the 6.5 in 3500 duallys with 4.10 gearing, who are getting insane fuel mileage (22-23mpg) And my thinking was, that I would find a 1500, and raise the axle ratio to something like a 3.42 or a 3.23, and end up with in the mid to upper 20s.

You probably already know this, but the 6.5 TD is known for blowing head gaskets... (just food for thought)

Also, pre 95 6.5's had fuel injection pump problems as well, however, the replacement was covered under warranty so if you find a pre 95 make sure you check to see that the injection pump was changed. :banghead:

Yes, I'm aware of both issues. . . If I remember, a good solution for the injection pump was to replace it with a 93 style pump. The older ones were extremely reliable.

In the Blazers and Tahoe's, they got the 4L60 or 4L60E, the newer ones got the electronic version.

All the 2500 and 3500's got the 4L80 and 4L80E. I think even the light duty 2500's (I rarely ever see one. I don't think many were made. 2500's with 6 lug axles) had the 4L80(E).

I friend I know had one blow a head gasket on his 93' (I was actually in the truck when it happened - you couldn't see across the intersection there was so much white smoke!). He also had injection pump problems at one time. Other than that, he put about 150k on that engine with virtually no other issues. This was in a 3500 crew cab 4x4 dually.

A friend of mine just had a set of head gaskets put on his 93 6.5 TD. I guess after 320k you can expect a few things like that. 4l80E trans is still going strong with no major work. I hope mine goes as long without troubles.
