Hello all, Im having a problem with my 5.3 1500 silverado. It wont shift into 4th on the highway. 1-2,2-3 seem fine but no 4th. Any thoughs on this?? I did put a transgo shift kit in it last year and everything has been fine till now. There is no slipping or funny noises either. Its just holding it in 3rd??

put a scan tool on it

Where is the best place to get this done?? The dealer??

Autozone will usually scan for free. I have a $100 software package Il oad on a laptop for the same purpose. Many shops charge $80 to pull a code so I fugured it would pay for itself quickly.

Do you still have reverse? And second? A friend of mine lost 4th in his truck and it took 2nd and reverse with it. Called for a rebuild because that sprag broke in the trans.

Everything seems great. Reverse, 1-3 all seem fine it just doesnt want to hold fourth gear. It will just start to go in and when you hit the gas to see it backs out and into 3rd again.

I sometimes would lose 4th gear when it was really hot out, I haven't noticed it doing it since I had the tranny flushed, but then again it hasn't been over 80 degrees out since that happend. When I loose it it does what your describing.

Don't mean to hijack this post..........but what kind of software did you buy......and did it come with the cable to plug into your truck?.....

I use THIS one. It came with a cable that worked on both GM and Ford. I had my truck and my wife had a Ford. You can buy it for one or multiple makers. It worked fine on both vehicles for the purpose. For me it was primarily to pull and or reset codes and to monitor o2 sensors real-time when they started to get lazy. It paid for itself once when I was on a 1100 mile family trip. Got a Service Engine light halfway through and wasn't sure what to do. Pulled the code and it turned out to be an o2 sensor warning. Reset it and it never came back. Works good for what it does but it is not a programmer.

It works best with an older laptop with a serial port. Many new laptops do not come with serial ports. You can get a USB to Serial converter but I have had difficulty getting them to work on a consistent basis. The serial cable connection has given me zero problems.

When you put in that shift kit did you torque the valve body bolts to spec and proper sequence after re-assembly with an inch pound torque wrench?
