starter prob

i know there are some other topics about starter problems, but the ones i read didnt have to do with my problem.

 

ok let me explain my situation to you

 

i have a 1968 chevrolet suburban, i just had a complete rewiring fyi.

 

i have had problems with my starter a couple times since i got my truck, and my friend who knows quite a bit about classic chevrolet trucks kept telling me it was my starter solenoid that kept getting stuck, so i went and bought a brand new super high torque performance mini starter.

 

i installed it and it has been working like a charm ever since i got it. never one time when my car wouldnt start.

 

now just today i have a new problem. when i turn the key to the ignition i have this HIDEOUS sound coming from my starter/flywheel.

my friend explained to me that its not catching the flywheel and just grinding against it.

now i was wondering if there is anything i can do to fix this, i.e. getting a different flywheel or shaving off a few mm's off the top of the starter so it gets closer to the flywheel and it will catch you know.

im looking for alternatives because i cant return my starter once i installed it and it cost me a pricey 150$.

 

if anyone has some tips, i would greatly appreciate it

Pull the inspection cover and inspect the ring gear on the flexplate(flywheel). On a '68 it is quite possible that the teeth are worn or even sheared off in a spot or spots. Especially if they were weakened by the grinding of the old starter drive. I would start there first before dropping another starter in it.
