True or False

Well it was -20 today in Eastern Ontario and wouldnt you know I ended up getting a nail in my tire. Right in the center of the tread. I filled it up and drove to my local GM dealer. He took it in right away(to my surprise). I was able to walk into the shop and watch him fix it. He put a plug in it and melted the top. He said when its a small nail through and through a plug will work just fine. Here is my question: I mentioned to them that if the tire was not repairable that they could go ahead and put on another tire. They claim that I would have to buy 4 tires. I said why? They said because of being a 4x4 you have to have 4 equally worn tires to match....sounds a little suspicious to me? Im going to buy new BFG's next fall but not willing to do it this early even though I have those crappy duellers.

Comments anyone?

Total bull. Speaking from experience I had to buy a new tire last year due to running over a sign post. Blew out one of my rear tires completely. I ended up going to my local dealer for the tire since all the local Goodyear places were telling me it would be at least 2 weeks before they could get me the tire. Nothing was ever mentioned about doing all 4 tires. They got me the tire I needed the next day and all is well.

Have a great day.

Biggest load of BS I have ever heard. I am sure they will try to give some transfer case, wheel spinning explination. The only thing I could understand is if they offered to do two tires. That just makes sense, why buy one when you can buy two, and get two more later on when the others wear down. Then you are basically buying two tires, but probably more often than you would buy four.

Only quality repair of a tire is a patch from the inside. plugs are low budget crap. I quote Michelin tird Co.

patch is the only way to go. you get some BOZO who dose not know what he is doing, and reams out the hole to much, and you are looking at a shot tire :fume:

The best and most durable repair is a combination patch/plug applied from inside. Some places still use flat patches applied from inside, which work pretty well, but only when the puncture is not very close to the sidewall.

Plugs are honestly just emergency repairs. They are most useful on motorycles where you do not have a spare tire to put on.

I laugh at how the dealers now a days are wanting to get into the tire biz. I'll take my tires to Discount, Big-O, or Goodyear, in that order, and no place else.

I have used the plug repair kits from places like walmart and such many times and have had no problems with them at all.

Just my 2 cents...If it's just a nail or screw in your tire I think a plug would do just fine. I also have been using plugs for years. There are differences in material used and tools. I carry one of these kits in all my vehicles. http://www.safetyseal.com/store/autokits.htm .

Even use them on my ATV and tractor, long as it's tubeless. It's saved me a lot a grief and money.

:(  As I recall...tire warranties are voided if a tire is plugged from the outside ???

If it's a stock tire, it doesn't have a roadhazard warranty anyway.
