I'd like to do more of my own service.I've always used the drive-on ramps to change oil, etc. But I'd like to do diff,ATF,radiator fluid changes, lube job, and rotate tires, etc.

Would someone tell me how to properly use jack stands? For example,to rotate tires front to rear,do I simply place 2 stands on one side of the truck?

I know this is elementary, but I can't find a descriptionof the procedure.Would a 3-ton jack and stands like Sears sells work for a 5800 lb truck?  TIA!

I put my rear jack stands under the rear axle as far outboard as I can get them. I put the front stands under the frame rail behind the front wheel where the 2 frame sections meet. Be careful as a few guys have bent their frame when jacking. Don't put your jack or jackstands under the front crossmember.

3 ton jack stands will be fine. The capacity is 3000 pounds per jack stand, X 4=12000 total. Get some with a high lift and good base.

Good luck and happy wrench turning!

Thanks,2001 HD

If I understand, you are using 4 stands, one at each "corner".Do you ever use 2 at a time(say on one side to rotate 2 tires--or on the front only to change oil) or rear only to do a rear diff?

Most of the 3-ton I have seen have a lif of 21-24" which would seem ok.Correct?      Thanks!

As far as rotating tires, you should put the driver's side front on the passenger's side rear.  Then move the driver's side rear to the driver's side front, repeat for the other side

There is a better one in the manual.

I don't know if you ever got your question answered.  When I rotate tires I drop the spare and use it.  Makes me a little nervous with my truck up on two stands at the corners, especially if you are rotating diagonally as suggested.  Probably a lot more work, but it seems safer.
