Is your mechanic cheating

Anybody ever *think* they got Mobil-1 but found out different? Now I'm gonna be paranoid.

That video really pisses me off - you have to watch those people and watch their every move. I am in an apartment right now so it is tough to change my own oil so I go to a jiffy lube down the street - they usually do a good job but now that I think about it there have been a few times that they say 'sir you can sit inside if you like' - I always say that I like to watch.

Bastards.

Just watch them.

Its jerk companies like that who make all mechanics, shops, and dealerships seem like criminals. Articles like these dramaticise these incidents. "is your mechanic cheating?" is not a fair or appropriate title for these articles. It should be, "Jiffy Lube Cheats america" or something like that. In my opinion lube boys ARENT mechanics. They are lube boys(or girls) simply that. Mechanics diagnose, repair, and maintain your vehicle. The lube boys at jiffy lube drain and fill your various automotive oils, and i guess change your fuel filter too(or dont as the video shows).

I had consistently had problems at Jiffy Lube and many folks I know call me because they continue to have problems. I am not sure what their deal is, but it is from the top down. I was very impressed when they greased 15 points in my '76 K2500 given that the truck only had 13. When I asked them to show me what they had greased, it turned out all the fittings were still covered with road dirt. That was 1989 in Pittsburgh, PA. In Boston, MA later that year I was told I needed to change the rear axle fluid in my car--the rear axle had been opened three weeks before for new wheel bearings. The oil they showed me was motor oil. In 1995 in Oregon I got the same treatment about grease fittings, along with the usual calls for new air filters, etc. In 2002 I was told I needed to change the tranny fluid in my car by being shown old motor oil. Most recently my cousin called saying that her Audi needed a new oil pan, two weeks after being at JL and she had had the oil changed there many times. Maybe someday some slick lawyer will shut them down, until then I will run with the oil I have in the crankcase before taking any vehicle to Jiffy Lube.

To be fair, I use the local valvoline shop with no issues, but I watch them like a hawk.

I am a firm believer in the "do it yourself" thing. But if I or my wife were to take a vehicle to someone else I will look at it before I drive off the lot. For example:

marking the oil filter and drain plug to make sure they replaced and drained, and if something is wrong then you can show them right then and there that they are in the wrong. :happysad:

Not to fire up a 6 month old post, but my buddies grease fittings were bone dry on his 2500HD. He was trusting the Chevy dealer to check them and even they were not doing the service they promised. This is also them same dealership who he went to for an alternator. He asked if they checked the batteries and they said they were fine. The batteries were not OK and he had to get them replaced as well.

He is never going back to that dealership again and he's also logging a complaint against them.

People go to the dealership and pay more because they are supposed to do things correctly. Who the hell can you trust?

I guess that's why I try to do as much as I can myself.

Anyhow, the reason I searched and found this post is I was wondering if hitting all the fittings at every oil change is really necessary? Seems over-kill and I was thinking once a year would be OK.

I remember when these quik lube places first started appearing. I was feeling lazy and against my better judgement I drove in. They put my car on a lift. I was standing outside the bay when the guy says I have to go wait in the lounge. I told him to take the car down, that was my last experience with those places.

Don't think taking it to a dealer is any better..FOR SURE!

Just change it yourself and never worry about it...always have and always will because those shops will be here til' the end of time because most people are just too busy....justa fact. :)

Anything I can do and want to do I do. :) For something I don't want to do, I am lucky to have a top notch HONEST mechanic in my town. I know, the independets who are worth anything are getting hard to find. Anybody who goes to quickie lube: Good Luck! :D

Everyone's busy, but I can't believe how much the stealerships charge for easy to do routine maintenance.

If I feel comfortable doing the work and have all of the required tools I do as much as I can. Often times the elevated part cost and rediculous labor charges is a lot more than I make per hour at my job. Plus I know the job actaully got done.

I might not be saving money in the end because I use it to justify buying toys to the wife and I have lots of toys, he he.
