"Low Fuel" Light

(Hope this isn't a duplicate post)

See my truck descr. in my signature, I have a 26 gallon tank and I wanted to test how many miles I could go when the low fuel light came on.  From the time it came on to when I ran out = 52 miles.  When it first came it, it went on and off a few times.  When it came on and stayed on to the time I ran out = 45 miles. (I get around 17 mpg)

Also when I filled up, I "packed" the gas in and it actually held 29.1 gallons, 3.1 over what it is rated.

I haven't driven mine till I run out but if I fill up immediately when it comes on it takes 25.8 to 26.5 gallons depending on how far it is to the nearest gas station.  I have a 2500HD with the 8.1 so I know I won't get far when the light comes on.

I was wondering if the light was coming on late or if I had a larger tank than what GM was advertising.  I average 12.3 so when the tripmeter goes past 320 miles I know I'm riding on fumes.  So far it's never gone past 324 miles.  Looks like mine is similar to yours.

The other option is the pumps at the station you went to are not calibrated correctly.

I have gotten 70 miles out of it when it came on once before I filled up. That time I put in 26.5 gallons. I usually run about 415 miles per tank and fill up 23 gallons. I usually run about 18 mpg.

FYI,  Running any vehicle out of gas intentionally or not is very hard on them.  I wouldn't reccomend doing this to anyone.

I think the light comes on in time for you to find a decent brand of fuel.  That is what it is designed for.

Occaisionally I see the light come on in my truck, but for the most part I get gas when I have 1/4 tank showing on the gauge.

yup....maybe its from my days in Europe where I could only go to Esso stations or pay four times the price, but I too will never let the tank go below 1/4.  The way I see it, that makes for cheaper fillups.  Maybe its only psychological...

I usually keep her topped off. If you get too low on fuel,

you're bound to pick up the crap on the bottom of the fuel tank. Fuel here is 4c cheaper on Mondays.

Have a great one,

I'm with Shaners I fill it up when it hits 1/4, no sense in pushing it, I don't wanna buy a new fuel pump!!!  I think tonight was the first time I've ever had it below a quarter tank, and that was because when I got back from a run at 1AM this morning I forgot to go out of my way to get gas so I got it tonight after work.
