Now that the General has announced 0%/72, I am seriously considering trading my 03 Sierra 1500 EC Z71 for an 06 Silverado 2500HD CC Duramax 4x4. It's the truck I have always wanted, but really have no need for (My trailer loaded with quads comes in at 4000 lbs). Questions:

1. Is the HD comfortable enough to be a daily driver?

2. Is the expense of maintaining a diesel offset by better fuel economy?

3. Are there any common problems with the Duramax of which I should be aware?

4. Since this will by no means be a work truck, would I be better off trading for a new half ton?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

I have an 02 2500HD without the duramax so i cant answer that part. But as far as the ride is concerned, i use mine to get back and forth to work every day. Its about 30 minutes each way. While the 2500hd is a pretty stiff ride compared to cars or even a 1500, it is by no means uncomfortable at all. I would think you would find it perfectly fine for daily driving but it really depends what your used to. I've never owned anything besides a 3500 and a 2500hd.

I'm in the same boat. Thinking about trading in my 05 1500 ext cab for a 2500HD this weekend. However, I believe that the 0% is only on light duty trucks(1500s) - verified on the chevy home page.

The 1500 with the Vortex max should still be at that 0%. There are alot of other treads in here (look for the "new truck" thread on page 3) --- whether anyone really needs a 2500HD based on what they're pulling. Most will tell you that for that load (I too am just pulling quads..) the 1500 would do. The vortex max has 6.0 and upgraded trani. Sounds like a 1500HD, but short box.

I live in CO and in the mountains my 1500 (w/lift) becomes a slug. A buddy of mine bought a 2500 with duramax and double pulled a 5th wheel and boat! faster than I could get my truck and Quad up berthoud pass, and i'm talking like 70MPH. He also smoked a F250 for what it's worth. Quite a spectacle and makes you appreciate the power and potential fun of that diesel... Good luck.

Interesting.. someone else said they got the HD at the 0% financing..

I did.

I don't have time to answer the questions above thoroughly right now. I've owned the 6L for four days. It is comfortable and quiet. The steering and handling are great for a HD truck. The overall stiffness in the frame and springs gives a kind of comfort too. I like it. It feels very solid and stable. The rear feels stiff when empty, and it will bounce on a rough road: it needs much stiffer shocks.

I like the carefree durability of the vinyl seats, but they don't breathe. So get cloth, or good seat covers. Their comfort is outstanding.

The base stereo is adequate. I test drove a used one that had the CD player and additional speakers in the doors (the factory installed upgraded stereo I think). It was a lot better.

A/C is very strong.

All of your questions are discussed in many places, here and elsewhere.

Haven't you test driven one?

I'm glad to be finished with my extended truck-shopping experience, comparing towing and hauling capacities, choosing gas or diesel, manual or automatic, looking at other brands, new versus used, etc. etc. And then, the 0% was offered just in time.

Good luck.

I believe 0% financing is available for all 06 models. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can, having faced similar questions in 04

1. Yes, a HD can be a daily driver. I drive my 2500HD Crew Cab every day. I actually like the stiffer ride of the HD's.

2. I worked out numbers of diesel vs. gas including price of fuel, price to purchase diesel, etc. For me the "break even point" was 6-7 years. I think it all depends on how much you drive. More you drive more sense it makes to get Duramax. But I should recalculate my numbers...based it on average of 10 MPG for the Big Block. I'm getting in the 11-11.3 MPG range now in the city.

3. None that I'm aware of

4. Only you can make that decision. I certainly don't have the need for a 8.1/Allison in my crew cab. I wanted four doors and DVD player. Didn't care for the really short box on the 1500 Crew's. Felt the 6.0 wasn't going to get that much better MPG than an 8.1. And I really liked the Allison tranny. So I opted for a Big Block. Haven't been sorry about that decision yet.

Hope this helps. By the way, I'm locked in to 0% financing on both my Crew and wife's Burban. Love it.
