06 Duramax Question

I just bought my first diesel truck on Wednesday (got in on the 0% financing deal) and am proud to say that I could not be any happier with the truck! It came with the new 360hp/650 ft.lbs. motor and loaded to the gills with options. Anyway, I was just curious if anyone makes a programmer/chip for the new motor? Everything I have found says it's only for the older (pre-06) motors. I'm not sure if I'm going to put a programmer on it yet, just shopping around. Any advice is surely welcome since I am definately a newbie in the diesel land!

Looks like a couple there, with one available now.

It may be some time to get the programmers out from the different vendors, but you can be sure they are working on it.

Not much yet and it might be a good idea to wait a while for the eventual LBZ programmers/tuners/chips to sort themselves out. Actually, the Allison 1000 is only built to take a maximum of 1000 Newtons (slightly over 700 ft/lbs of torque), so plan on a transmission rebuild-kit when you "wake up" your underpowered truck.

In the real world, the LBZ engine will pull just about any travel trailer that is made and it accelerates like a Corvette. Most of us are quite content with 650 ft/lbs of torque.

By the way, your first few tanks of fuel might be a little low on mpg. I have a couple thousand miles on mine now; I'm getting 20-22 mpg on the freeway (legal speeds), a firm 15 mpg around the city and the two times I towed our 8,000 pound trailer here in Oregon (long trips in mountains) I got 13.6 mpg and 13.7 mpg. My friends say that the break-in period to get the max mileage is anywhere from 10K (towing) to 25K (no towing).

Hey, my friend, just love your new truck...it's the absolute Best Of Breed.

Edge makes a good box, personally i'd avoid "KennedyDiesel" if you need reasons just search this site and the internet...

Uh oh, the psycho with a hard-on for bashing Kennedy is back. Go away, troll boy.

The only time he shows up is when someone mentions Kennedy. How pathetically sad.

Despite the fact that he cries to forum and site owners anytime anyone exposes him or has a complaint and his main site the TDP try to delete or edit the posts of the failures and complaints about his products, there is still info to be found.

Funny to see that guy present himself as some kind of expert or authority on GM diesels, yet a few years ago he was only seling trailers! see,

www.kennedytrailers.com

but it now forwards to his diesel website...

So how could this person get so suppossedly experienced?

What kind of Research, Development, and Testing can a ONE MAN BAND do?

Do you know the man hours invold to do the work RIGHT?

No offense but i would think long and hard who i spend my hard earned money with and especially when upgrading a $40,000+ truck!

with parts from a man who knows his mods will void your warranty (says so on his website) and maybe will admit you will break things on your truck!

Simply buying EFI Live and other programming equipment does not make one and expert and pushing everything up to max to get power has a price and take a severe toll on the powertrain, hence why more LEGITIMATE places want to keep your truck running to get repeat business, not sell you more parts of your truck to replace those you will break from using their mods...

He's not the only shady operator out there, but he is the most pushy, and the tactics he uses to sell are, well let's say not so honest...

Let's try to stay on topic..

As i said i like Edge, HyperTech makes good stuff too!

Buyers Beware! make sure you are dealing with a REPUTABLE comapny with MANY YEARS of experience in the field of the product you are considering.

IF the person claims to be a professional or expert ask them to provide the credentials from an accredited professional trade school or organization like the SAE (Socienty of Automotive Engineers) or GM certification to back it up... Do NOT put much weight on references given by places or discusion sites where the place ADVERTISES, sponsors and/or peddles their wares.

Ive only bought one thing from John (Kennedy) and had no problems with it. I fail to see where posts about Kennedy were deleted on the Diesel Place....enlighten me please?

FWIW, I buy all of my stuff from Eric Merchant/Merchant Automotive. As far as im concerned he knows more about the dmax than anyone. Any competitive pulling/racing Dmax with a "built" engine was most likely built by Eric.

If the posts stating problems with products peddled by John (Kennedy Diesel) were quickly deleted,

then you would not likely have seen them...

that's why they delete them!

Dude, take your own advise and stay on topic. You can't, I know. Try considering that there are those that have had nothing but good service from John. You obviously have not - point taken many, many, many times. Take your meds and get over it already. Your losing any sense of credibility by having these episodes constantly.

Here is my advice: leave the $#%^& truck alone! They have pretty much pushed this engine to the limit squeezing so much power out of a relatively small displacement engine. By messing with injector pressures and fuel injection pump timing by instlaling aftermarket marts, you can actually damage the engine and void your warranty. Some people have done this to diesel trucks and the manufacturers (quite rightly0 told them to go pound sand).

If you want to mod the truck, wait until the warranty is over. But why would you want to mess with this engine to begin with? Just becuase somebody makes something for it that they claim increases horsepower and torque?

I beg to differ.

FYI, nobody is messing with fuel pressures when you install a "chip".

The injection pump could care less what the timing is...

But the engine pistons and valves care. The manufacturer could easily have used a performance chip like that if that was the smart thing to do. But they also need to make the engine durable to cover it under the 100k miles warranty, and have it meet the emission standards. Performance modifications may void the warranty. Some new diesel engine computers can actually save in memory the performance enhancing chip settings, so they can be retrieved later. So better check with the dealer if it is OK to install performance chips on these within the warranty period.

I am sure that if they came out with a 1,000 HP, 1500 ft-lbs Duramax next year, there would be those offering additional performance enhancements. And some would have to install them the second day after they bought the truck.

It is not my truck, I could not care less. But I know of a case where a new Ford diesel truck owner installed aftermarket performance chip and blew his engine after several thousand miles. He did not like it when Ford presented him with a $ 14k bill for a new engine.
