Pickup rental

I'm needing to travel out of state (about 1,000 miles each way) to pick up a car and trailer it back and really don't want to put those miles on my GMC. Does anyone know of any companies out there (particularly in the Dallas area) that rents 3/4 ton pickups, preferably a diesel? Thanks!

have you looked into auto shippers, DA Autoshippers.

They do door-to-door, door-to-depot pickup/deliveries

From Arizona to North Carolina we shipped a 2003 Tacoma, full damage insurance, door-to-door for just under $900. They even washed the truck after shipping prior to delivery.

U-Haul usually has a lot of different trucks available. The U-Haul depot near me usually has about 5 or 6 half-ton models along with a couple of 3/4 trucks sitting outside. You could get a half-ton truck and a dolly for the car. Search U-Haul website to see if one is near you. Good Luck.

A U-Haul is going to cost a ton...

When we moved, a one-way U-Haul for an 1,100 mile trip was about $6,000, plus gas, plus another $400 for the auto trailer. Budget truck rental was slightly cheaper, but it was still over $3,500. If you rent a U-haul locally, (Pickup and dropoff at the same location), they will charge you about $0.50/mile. (On a side note, if anyone is moving several hundred miles, I highly recommend ABF U-Pack, they're far cheaper and more convenient than a rental truck)

I would think that most car rental places that rent pickups won't have anything over a 1/2 ton, won't have a hitch installed, and will specifically say that you cannot tow with it.

Why not take your truck? 2,000 miles isn't all that much, and what's the point of having a truck if you'r afraid to use it like one?

I agree. I got my truck to haul stuff, and I regularly make a 1400 mile (round trip) trek to go visit my parents. Sure, it adds up, but in the end its just miles.

Stay the h*ll away from U-Haul, they screw people over royally all day long, they're famous for it. I'd shoulder-strap myself to the trailer and do it Rickshaw style before I'd talk to U-haul.

Well, I didn't say I was afraid to use it and I normally wouldn't flinch. She's only 4 years old and already has over 103k miles. I wouldn't think twice if it was a week long trip with the family but a quick 2 day trip and back, I'd prefer to rack up someone else's miles, even if it costs a couple of hundred bucks.

Reineke...I know exactly where you're talking about. It's Capps rental right next to Chase Oaks Golf Course. I'll have to try it out. Thanks!

Last time I rented a U Haul truck to move was in 1985. The rental fee for a 1000 mile trip was only about $ 1200 back then. $ 6000 today? Holy smoke, that is ridiculous. I would buy a good used school bus (you can get them for about $ 2500 in good shape and quite road worthy) , move myself, and sell the bus. Unless somebody else paid the moving bill.

Yeah, U-Haul (Or U-Stall as we call it) was considerably more than Penske or Budget, and both Penske & Budget have much newer equipment than U-Haul. It was funny, when we moved we passed two U-Hauls on the side of the road, broken down. One of them the people were on the side of the road, moving all of their stuff from one truck to another. That would have made me madder than you can believe. Seeing that made me very happy that we used ABF U-Pack, and had a professional driver pulling our stuff.
