500 Toungue/5000 Max - What?

I just noticed ....

 

"500lbs Tongue Weight 5000lbs Maximum Load"

 

... is inscribed on my rear bumper cover.

 

Surely that is for the actual bumper and not for the reciever. For almost a year now, I've been doubling that on the reciever ...

Yup that's for the bumper. The hitch receiver should have a different rating with its own label.

Yup that is the bumper. The stock that comes with the 2500HD is rated the same were between a class 3 and 4 if I remember correctly. There should be a separate label on the receiver hitch with two different capacities 1 for just a ball mount and one for a weight distribution hitch.

I specifically looked when I read about hitch failures.

Mine has one, it's paper, so it may or may not be there on some one else's.

The label is probably on the 7 way plug bracket above the plug. You have to get down low to see it though. Its somewhat hidden by the bumper. On my 01 it is above the 7 way plug on that bracket. There is black paint over part of mine obscuring it.
