What is up with GM fuel pumps???

It looks like mine just crapped out at 68K miles. Luckily just after I returned from a 200 mile trip from the Nevada desert:) I'm still pissed though. My dads went out on his 1500 at 40K miles last year. What is up with these GM fuel pumps? We change our filters every 10K miles as recommended.

Called the stealer to get a quote on replacement and they wanted $950!!!! Give me a break. $400 for the pump and $500 in labor for a 2hr job. I won't be using theat dealer any more....

I just picked up a genuine GM fuel pump off of ebay for $130 and am getting ready to install this weekend. I have been doing some reading and it seems the best way is to lift the bed from one side and perform the replacement from the top side leaving the fuel tank in place.

Would like to hear from anyone else who has done their own swap.

Hey, I had the same exact problem, but with 5K miles !!! warranty towed it, gave me a loaner, put a new one, no cost. But it looks like a recall to me. I know a lot of people with the same problem.

Unfortunately I saw a brand new looking silverado being put on a rollback as I was rolling by on the highway. I assumed it was either a bad tranny or fuel pump :shakehead:

Knock on wood I have 92K on mine and no excissive noise or signs of failure...yet.

My fuel pump was replaced not too long before I bought it. There is a definite audible high pitched whine coming from it. Should I be worried. I've put around 1500 miles and no problems.

The whine is normal. To preserve the pump, make sure that your tank is never less than 1/2 full. With a half a tank the pump will never suck air and never not be submerged, which means it will stay cool and not burn out.

Just for everyone's info - you can usually get a truck with a dead fuel pump to start up a few more times by having someone smack the fuel tank with a large wooden mallet (sp?) or an open palm while you crank it. I've seen it work several times, always funny to witness.

My pump lasted a little longer about 160000 km at 1:30 in the morning going up a hill. luckily the truck gave me a few warning signs before that so i did the same as you bought the pump off ebay about a 2 weeks before and got it 2 days before it quit.

Taking the bed off is the best way just make sure everything is disconnected before you lift, i forgot my line of fire light bar and ending up breaking it (heres my sign)

But you should have seen the service managers and the mechanincs faces when i told them i did it myself and for 125bucks it was like they were found out.

My first fuel pump went out at about 67K miles. Now the second one is whining pretty bad too. It would be nice if GM could make one that would last a little longer than this crap.

I think Rolandd has the answer...these things need to be covered by fuel to keep cool...if you burn one out..look at ebay...$115 for complete unit with housing and gauge sending unit. can be replaced in less than 2 hours.

i put 1 in my s-10 after about 37k and kinda pissed me off, so after it went out again i just replaced the whole d**n think with a fuel cell and a fuel pump.

Hopefully i wont have this problem with my new truck but if i do i still have that fuel cell and pump

its the crap theyre getting from the suppliers. It was kind of a problem on the 88-98s I havent heard of them being as bad on the 98-06s Mines still going on 13K miles.

the reason it really costs so much for labor, is most of the time the mechanic ends up having to bench press a near full tank of fuel!

I've replaced a few pumps over the years on other vehicles and I always use a jack and 2x12 to take the weight. Works wonders for me. If I had to do it on the lift, Transmission jacks are wonderful. Wonder if they heard of these things?
