Bumper

Hey guys, when I bought my truck, it had two dents in the front bumper where the previous owner hit her husbands car in the driveway (yeah I know right?). Anyways its got some bends in the bumper and I was wondering if you think I could pull it off and hammer them out with a rubber mallet or a hard plastic mallet or if its too tough. Also when I pull off the front bumper what should I be cautious of?

If you are talking about the chromed portion of the bumper, you will accomplish nothing with a rubber or plastic mallet. using a regular hammer will will not work either. The only practical way to straighten something like this is if you had a 50 ton hydraulic shop press and used two thick metal plates on either side of each dent to force the metal inbetween to straighten out. and that would only work on straight portions of the bumper. Curved areas would be next to impossible to do anything with.

yeah im talkin about the chrome part of the bumper. Its a 99 sierra so most of the bumper is that chrome part. It seems so thin that you can hammer it out. I dont think heat would help, it would probably warp it. I dont think its really neccessary that you use a 50 ton press tho. after all the truck which is much less than 50 tons hit the car at such a slow speed bent it up so easily. im not trying to disagree with you, i'm just skeptacle of a 50 ton press bending it back

You will need to replace the bumper. I too have 2 dents on it from when I destroyed the rear plastic bumper of a 2006 Ford Exploder  No way for those things to be pounded out.

Point inpact loading is much more severe than gradually applied load, in this case by a 50 ton press. I only used the 50 ton for illustrative purposesw - I have a 20 ton press and it does not look big enough for a job like this.

You may wantg to try placing the bumper on a heavy wood block, then place another harwood block on tthe opposite side of the dent (non-chromed part) and keep hig4tting the wood block with a small sledge hammer and see if you can straighten the dent.

What do i have to do to take off the bumper? what do i have to avoid? i think small dents would be better than 2 large dents dont you think?
