01 S-10 2.2L Blew Head gasket and cracked block

My friend has a 01 S-10 with the 2.2L...he called me the other day and he said he was driving down the highway and the temp guage started to increase rapidly and he said he saw steam (what he called smoke) coming from the engine and all the coolant was leaking out all over the ground. I thought he might of blew one of the radiator hoses or a crack had developed in the radiator. Wong...turns out it blew the head gasket and cracked the block. My question is would it be cheaper to rebuild it or try and find another 2.2L somewhere? Also do the 2.2L blow head gaskets often? I thought the older versions of the 2.2L only did it.

Its cheaper just to rebuild the gasket. Depending on how much damage was done, if the damage was minimal, you still have alot of life left in that motor.

Yeah...but it cracked the block also...so he would have to find another block. It sounds to me it was pretty bad....i havent seen it yet...his dad took it to the stealership where he worked and they said they could find a 2.2L that has about 80K on it for around 800 bucks not including installation. To me that sounds a little cheap for an engine...but i may be wrong.
