4x4 regearing! HELP PLEASE!!!!

I HAVE A 1998 GMC SIERRA 1/2 TON WITH A 5.7 LITER 4X4 AND 33 INCH TIRES WITH INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION! I DONT THINK THAT IT IS NORMAL TO GET 8.2 MILES TO THE GALLON IS IT?? I AM LOOKING 2 FIND A GEAR THAT WILL WORK WITH THE 33"S AND 35"S. I AM THINKING 4.56 IN THE FRONT AND REAR! I JUST WANT SOME OTHER OPINIONS BEFORE I SPEND MY TIME AND MONEY ON IT. I LIKE TO DO MY OWN WORK ON MY VEHICLES AND I'VE CHANGE SOLID AXLE GEARS BEFORE BUT WOULD IT BE POSIBLE TO CHANGE THE GEARS WITHOUT DROPPING THE AXLE??

Which ratio do you currently have? Even a 3.73 shouold be getting better than that with only 33" tires. a 4.56 would be good for the 35's and great for the 33's. It sounds like you could be having more issues though than too high of gearing. More details about driving condition, habits, truck conditions, uses, etc... could help.

4:56s are awful high for just 33-35" tires, you might want to think on the line of 4:11s

THANKS i am looking at 4.56 because i tow alot and a 1/4 of it is offroad and i hear that they will give you more pulling power!! eventually i am putting my lift on and i have a set of 35" on beadlocks off of a humvee!! not legal but i can handle it!! i have a friend with 38's 4.56 and gets better milage than me!! i drive a lot of backroads and like 2 mud ride but i stopped for a while tryin 2 see if it was that that was making it bad but it stayed the same!! my dad is a certified mechanic and we have gotten it checked out at a dealer and they cant find anything that could change it except the tires!!
