My 2000 Silverado runs great going down the highway and even city commute. Its just when the truck is stopped and just idleing. I am probably being too picky, most people may not even notice it. But the engine doesn't idle as smoothly as I would like or as some other trucks. Would a synthetic help?

I have the same "rough" idle on my 1999 5.7. At the time I bought it I felt the same as you and checked a few 5.7s of friends and at the dealership. They all did the same. I heard ROUMORS that these days manufacturers have to keep the idle leaner than in the "old days" and that is the reason for the "rough" idle. Given that this is true I doubt anything would help.

 

Now I got so used to it that if you had not mentioned it I would not notice it any more.

You could just increase idle speed

How do you increase the idle speed on a coil pack.... there is no distributor.

You can't. That is MAYBE if you have a Hypertech Programmer or alike.

 

You know the strangest thing is that Chevy has changed the fireing order on the engines after 5.7. Also I read the reason for this was so the truck idles smoother. So after reading that I wanted the new truck with this new engine too (eventually never got one and stayed with my 5.7 1999). But since you mentioned about your "problem" I guess they are all the same.

 

You probably don't want to hear that, but guess you could just accept it the way it is.

Brad, I am curious if your truck has had the plugs, wires or 02 Sensors replaced. I see it is a 2000 model and it it has the factory wires and/or plugs, this could be a part of your idle issue.

 

My 02 idles as smooth as warm butter.

I have repalced the spark plugs. A local mechanic looked at the engine comparment and didn't think there was any need to replace the plug wires, so I didn't. Probably do it by 100,000 miles. I has about 86,000 on it now. I have not replace the 02 sensors. Aren't there 4 on this truck?

i had the platinum 2s ( with the 2 prongs)

it made my truck shake a little bit at idle.

 

I switched to the NGK TR-55's and it idles my smoother now.

there not that expensive either. 2.99 a plug i believe.

you can get the NGK TR-55 Iridium plugs that are pre-gapped but there will run you a little over $6.

I hope those OEMs were anything but Bosch plugs. Bosch can't make a good spark plug. I've tried all their different plugs and NONE of them ran as smooth as the AC plugs I ended up replacing them with. I haven't tried NGK plugs yet but I hear they are just about the cat's a$$. Either way, anything is better than Bosch plugs.

They were the AC Delco Platinum 2 maybe....?? Im not exactly sure. I just know I bought the OEM plugs and they are AC Delco.

i just know that the NGK TR-55s made a big difference in mine.
