Crazy Noise

06 GMC Sierra ext cab 4x4 w/7k miles.

Driving 60-70 mph there is a vibration/noise. Has to be on the highway light load or coasting. It does not feel like the tires are out of bal. Anything below or above that speed the truck is smooth and quiet. Okay this is how it sounds(no bashing please) waa...waa...waa...waa. Its pulsing. Its spaced out. So its not constant. Of course i brought it to the dealer, drove the sevice writer and pointed out the noise. He heard it and said we will fix it. Well two days later "we cant make it make the noise come get and drive it till it gets worse. Well on a trip it drives you crazy. 75 mph and i love the truck. 65mph and i want to smash this thing w/a hammer for like an hour. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

That sounds like the good ole worthless dealer for you. Might want to take it to a body shop and get it checked for alignment. I would be seriously pissed if I were you because you are still under warranty.

transfer case is my guess

Why do you think it is the transfer case? Your guess is as good as mine. I have been in the auto repair bus. for 20 yrs, this one has me cofused. I did drive it in and out of 4 wheel drive to see if it made a diff. and it did not. The transfer case still spins regardless right? I dont know i do wish the dealer would fix it but it looks like its my problem and i will have to fix. Hey thanks alot and if you or anybody else has ideas let me know im all ears.

Thank you.

I won't get into the details of harmonic frequencies here but.... I would try doing a tire rotation (since you're at 7k... did you do a tire rotation at 6k but forgot to do it at 3?)

Basically the waa waa noise sounds like its from tires but since it comes and goes it sounds like you're not actually hearing the tire noise itself but the interference of two or more tires at once.

I did rotate tires front to rear at 5k for the first time.. I hear ya though i wish i had four tires to put on and try. Thats a great place to start. The truck did sit on the lot 9 mo. before i bought it w/no miles on it. Do you think a tire that sits loaded like that for that long could cause a belt problem?

Is the vibration you feel in the steering wheel or more in the seat ?

Seat, wheel, feet. I am so sensitive to it now! The noise/vibration is very minor but enough to drive ya nuts on a trip.

this thread made me suspect the tranfer case

Thanks, i emailed him, i hope he gets back with me. He mentioned a tire problem as well. I have the same bridgestones he had. Wanted to know what he found out as far as the tire problem, symptoms, ect...

sounds like a tire problem to me. I had brand new tires once on a MB and they made noise and vibrations even when balanced. They turned iut to be OUT OF ROUND. Some places have machines to check that.

I had a similar problem with my 03 Yukon. Vibration starting at 65 MPH ending at 75 and coming back again at 80 MPH+. Any speed below there was nothing. Also had this resonating low pitched rumble in truck as soon as vibration would start. Alignment was bad / tires had to be rotated but in the end turned out to be 3 dents in the rear propeller shaft ( driveshaft ). Previous owner apparently drove over a rock / curb or something. Had to have the shaft re-tubed & balanced but it finally took care of the problem. If tires turn out OK I would check your driveshafts & axles for any signs of damage.

Whew, had a heck of a time getting back here with the sytem upgrade.

Anyways, The tire vibration I had occured at slower speeds. My guess is the transfer case. An easy way to check it is to get on as smooth a road as you can find. Set the cruise control at the speed you hear the noise/vibration. (And what you described is the noise and low repeating roar...)

Now switch the truck into 4 wheel drive or Auto. If it is the transfer case, the noise and vibration will disappear. When I had my issue, it was my service manager who found this issue. And it is a known issue with a TSB.

The tire issue was corrected in late 2005 so you may or may not have the tire issue. Again, it is easy to tell if there is a problen with them. If they start getting 'chopped' between rotations, then you have the bad tires and according to the point person i dealt with, if there is a complaint made by the consumer related to this, the dealer is supposed to replace the tires. Kinda like a hidden warranty.

I will keep watch here to see what the outcome is!!!!!

Bill

For anyone wondering how my truck has been since the nightmare two years ago, since the tires and transfer case have been replaced, not one issue with the truck at all.

Sounds very familiar mine started out as a pulsing noise and now is constant.

So far I have had:

1. Alignment

2. Replacement of Front Diff Housing (Think the TSB listed above)

3. Front Differential Rebuilt

4. We will see Monday when I take it back in.

Mine does it in two wheel drive. I did not switch it to four wheel while going 60-70 cause i thought it would hurt something. But i did slow down to put in four wheel drive and got going 60-70 and noise was still there same everything. Did you have to pay for all the work you listed or was it warranty? I did not know about any front diff. cover problem. What kind of noise can a cover make?
