Amsoil?

I just took delivery of a NBS 2007 2WD 2500HD CCSB with the 6L Gas and 6l90 Trans.

I ran Mobil One Synthetic in my old '00 half-ton w/ the M1 synthetic filters, and changed it out every 3,000 miles. I know that was a little bit of overkill, but when I started doing it in 2001 it wasn't much more expensive to do an oil change with synthetic in my driveway than it was to have it professionally changed with conventional oil at a jiffylube or the like.

In the years since I've become more busy, and synthetic oil has become much more expensive. Since I started to frequent these forums I have seen people mention AMSOIL in a few threads, and have visited their website and ordered a catalog a few weeks ago.

I like the idea of a Synthetic which claims 15-25k mile oil drain intervals (so that I can still do the work myself without having to crawl underneath my truck every 6 or 10 weeks). I also like that their products are priced about the same as Mobil One (the filters are a bit pricey, but given an oil change every 25k miles it would work out to cost less than changing with conventional every 3-6k miles). I also like that they're selling a truly synthetic product, not something filtered and processed to "synthetic specifications" a la Castrol Syntec...

My question for you forum-goers (I'm posting this in the heavy and light-duty truck forums) is:

Does anybody have a different perspective I've overlooked, or have anything negative to say about AMSOIL and/or their products?

Dan, I did the same thing 2 years ago when I bought my Yukon XL. I had been using Castrol Syntec for years and wanted something better. I researched this and decided on Amsoil.

If you go for the extended drain intervals, I would suggest you change the filter more often even if you use the ext drain filter from Amsoil. I am sure it is a great filter as Wix helped them design it. To my knowledge, Wix produces it for them also but I am not 100% sure. I use CARQUEST Filters (Wix) and change the filter only at 3 months and do a full change at 6 months. Std filters such as Wix, AC etc are designed to go about 5 to 6K.

You better read the AMSOIL fine-print, oil change intervals, AMSOIL filters you have to use to keep the AMSOIL warranty, etc.

And, you don't ever go past the Manufacturer recommended oil change interval without a Used Oil Analysis (UOA), unless of course you have deep pockets for expensive engine repairs.

I'm not knocking their products. I used the 15w-40 Diesel oil in my Dodge 2500 with no problems. But, I also did the manufacturer required 7500 OCI's too.

If you did use the 25k oil from AMSOIL how many UOA's would you have to do at $15-$20 a pop? Probably four or five cause that's how many times your OLM will go off figuring 5-7k when the light comes on.

Just a thought, but you could save money using Pennzoil Platinum and changing when the OLM comes on.

I don't think you are going to find much bad to say about this stuff. It is about the best out there.

Have to agree with that statement.

I have found in my recent oil research, Royal Purple and AMSoil are good products. If you want the best, go with LE (Luquid Engineers). They primarily sell to commercial users and Race car people. You can ocasionally find a dealer local, but you have to look for them. The advantage:

Dino oil does not have the superior lubricating properties of Syn.

Syn oil does not have the cushion properties of Dino.

LE over came this problem by producing an oil with the cushion of the Dino and the lub of the Syn. Best of both worlds.

As far as changes, I would go between 3-5k with a Wix filter and LE products. Well I do now. I have graduated form the world of M1 to the big leagues. And I did it to protect the large investment under the hood.

I'm guessing you meant to say Lubrication Engineers in your post. Maybe it's another company your talking about but LE (Lubrication Engineers) does indeed sell to mostly commercial users and the red color is its trademark

AMSOIL is a great product. The new EaO oil filters rock. Every oil analysis I have seen when that filter was used even with a regular oil has been great.

The oil change interval is up to 25k, that is for regular service driving. 15k is for severe service and most of us fall under severe service category. If you do run the oil out to a long drain interval I highly recommend you take an oil sample at 10k to make sure all is well. You don't have to use an AMSOIL filter, but you do have to change what ever filter you do use at that manufactures specified recommendations. The EaO can go the distance and gets more efficient the long it stays on. When I started running it all my insolubles went down. The last change I did on my wifes venture had 15k and the filter was doing it's job with a very low insolubles level compared to what I had in the past.

If you have any questions just ask.

Good catch Dude! It has been a long week already and I am leaving in the morning to go to Tulsa, only to land and drive to Kansas. I will be non-stop for the next 3 weeks before I get to slow down for a breather.

Nick, I have been considering the new Amsoil EAo filter for some time. It sounds like you are sold on them. You commented that they become more efficient the longer they stay on (to a point) but how do they compare with a std filter such as Wix, when they are first installed.
