'07 Nbs Sierra Amp Speaker Install Problems

I have a 2007 NBS GMC Sierra with factory CD. It is not the Bose system.

 

Today, I had a Memphis MClass 4 channel amp and four Memphis MClass 6-1/2" speakers installed at a local shop. Kept the factory head unit.

 

Here's the list of problems.

 

The amp would not trigger, so they wired it through the O2 sensor fuse as a temporary fix.

 

Amp turns on with ignition, but the 10 minute delay between ignition off and door open is gone.

 

Fade from front to rear does not function properly. Put fade fully to front, all speakers go silent. One click toward rear, and all speakers have low volume equally. Volume equally increases at all speakers as fade is moved more toward rear.

 

Cannot isolate any individual speakers. Can only isolate both left speakers together. Pretty sure this is because Fade does not work properly.

 

Front right speaker has distortion, most noticeable on conversation stations like XM PR and all AM stations. Put Balance fully to left speakers, and distortion is gone. One click toward right speakers, and distortion sets in and gains as Balance is shifted more toward the right speakers.

 

All chimes for door open, seat belt, turn signal are gone.

 

Any ideas or suggestions?

First question is how reputable is the install shop? Sounds like they tried to improvise and failed.

 

Wiring to the O2 sensor is not a good idea....at all. Rewire the remote turn on to an accesory fuse in the dash fuse box, try to keep it off of anything over 20 amps. The thought that they used something like a O2 sensor worries me with that shop.

 

Problem number 2 is directly related to problem 1. The sensor power is not tied in to the 10 minute delay, so power gets shut off with the key. Wiring the remote to a 10 minute delay compatible accesory will allow the amp to remain on. However be careful or running an amp with the engine off. Amps can draw significant power and will drain a battery rather quickly.

 

Did the shop use some type of LOC or did they just hardwire it in? I do not believe the MClass amps feature high level inputs. Again, not sure the sheop knew what they were doing here, or a rookie was doing the work unsupervised. If a high level output is wired to a low level input, your sound is gonna be really messed up. It even sounds like the hardwiring is incorrect.

 

Direct problem from problem 4.

 

Problem 5 sounds like it is a speaker or speakers out of phase. Again, wiring is borked. Speakers out of phase basically means that the wire carrying the negative signal is connected to a positive terminal and vice versa on the other terminal. + to - and - to +. Normally this won't cause noise issues unless another speaker is wired correctly. That is, if 3 speakers are wired incorrectly and 1 is wired correctly, you will have a noise or distortion issue. If you disconnect that correctly wired speaker the others will of course sound fine. It all relates to sound cancellation and is a somewhat complex subject.

 

Problem 6 is a weird issue. Not exactly sure what is happening there.

 

 

 

Basically it sounds like the shop did a very poor job on the install. My advice would be to take it back and talk to a service manager and tell him what is going on. If they do not or cannot fix it, get your money back and find a better shop.

I agree... WTF were they thinking tapping into the O2 sensors? :confused:

RUN back to that shop as fast as you can and get your money back and NEVER go back. I would rather take it to a circuit city or best buy than go there!!!!

The shop has the truck today, additional components are being installed, problems are getting resolved. This shop, has an excellent reputation. They stand behind their products and their installs. That's why I went to them. The owner is working with me and I have every confidence everything will be as it was designed later today.

 

Comments that bash don't really help me guys. I posted to get information so I would better understand what was going on. Nuff said.

Bashing doesn't help you per se, but you dont quite understand the severity of the mistakes made.

 

I would be very sure to have them replace all speakers and amps for free. Putting a 20v AC current into a 5v input is bad. Also i can almost guarentee the amp was clipped like crazy and your speakers were damaged to some extent.

 

It is great they are fixing the problems, but there should not have been the problems to begin with. You really do need to raise billy hell about it.

 

Did they offer any explanations as to why they really really REALLY borked up an install and made it potentionaly harmful to the vehicle computer management system?

UPDATE - Everything is running perfectly. The owner did all the work himself today, rather than his installers, and kept me posted throughout the day. System sounds awesome, all other systems on the truck are working fine now.

    • I really wanted to go to the Fox 2.5's But they were like ~$1,500 vs ~$425 for the Bilsteins. And my research on FOX shocks was that they do not have a great reputation for longevity. I am sure they the FOX's are fantastic, but I know from experience the Bilsteins are rock solid for at least 150k miles. 
    • Conditions for Meeting a Cold Start   The ignition voltage is between 10 and 15 V. The barometric pressure (BARO) is more than 75 kPa. The engine coolant temperature (ECT) at start-up is less than 42°C (108°F). The intake air temperature (IAT) is between 2–32°C (36–90°F). The engine is OFF for greater than 6 hours or the following conditions must be met: The start-up IAT minus start-up ECT are within 12°C (22°F). The start-up ECT minus start-up IAT are within 50°C (90°F). Fuel level is between 25 and 75 %.   Circuit/System Verification Verify that all I/M System Status indicators report YES, and that no I/M Test DTCs are present.If any I/M Test DTCs are set Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle. If no I/M Test DTCs are set All OK. Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System Set Procedure   Warning: Refer to Road Test Warning. Note: Do NOT touch the accelerator pedal until told to do so. A change in TP Sensor angle or an increase in engine speed may invalidate this portion of the test.   Note: An I/M Test DTC will not be stored or erased from the ECU except at the end of trip processing, which occurs 5 s after ignition OFF.   Ensure that the vehicle meets the conditions for a cold start listed above. If the EVAP I/M System Status indicator displays NO, perform the EVAP Service bay test if applicable. Turn OFF all of the accessories; HVAC system, other electrical loads, including aftermarket/add-on equipment, etc., and open the hood.   Set the vehicle parking brake and ensure the vehicle is in park for automatic transmission or neutral for manual transmission.   Start and idle the engine for 2 min.   Close the hood, release the parking brake and Accelerate at part throttle to 72–80 km/h (45–50 mph) with this speed maintained until the engine reaches operating temperature, 8–10 min.   Continue operation under these conditions for an additional 6 min.   Accelerate at part throttle to 90 km/h (55 mph) with this speed maintained for 2 min.   Release the accelerator pedal for at least 10 s. This will allow the vehicle to enter the decel fuel cut off.   Safely stop the vehicle, with the engine in drive for automatic or neutral with the clutch pedal depressed and parking brake applied for manual. Allow the vehicle to idle for 2 min.   Shift the vehicle to park for automatic and neutral for manual. Turn OFF the ignition and exit the vehicle. Do NOT disturb the vehicle for 45 min.   Observe the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System Status with a scan tool. All of the I/M System Status indicators should display YES.   If the EVAP I/M System Status indicator displays NO, turn OFF the ignition, ensure that the vehicle meets the conditions for a cold start, and repeat steps 6-11 three more times, or until the EVAP I/M System Status indicator transitions to YES. If the indicator continues to display NO, refer to the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System DTC Table to identify the DTCs that did not run.   If any of the I/M System Status indicators display NO, refer to the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System DTC Table for the indicator which did not display YES. The I/M System DTC Table identifies the DTCs associated with each I/M System Status Indicator.   Observe the I/M Test DTC information with a scan tool. Verify there are no I/M Test DTCs present. If an I/M Test DTC is set, diagnose the DTC using the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle and refer to Inspection/Maintenance System Check.   Observe the engine DTC information with a scan tool. Verify no DTCs are present. If a DTC is set, diagnose using the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle. After repairs, perform the Inspection/Maintenance Complete System Set Procedure to verify no further DTCs are set.       Looks like one procedure to me.  Repeated as necessary.
    • My 2020 AT4 6.2 has had the valve spring issue addressed at ~200 miles, front cover/pump replaced at 18k, water pump at 34k and idler pully at 65k.  I would agree with ditching by 100k unless you elect to go with upgraded hardware...say built 10l80 and an lt4 or l8p swap.
