06' Silverado Rust!

Hey guy's gotta 06' CC silverado z71 with rust bubble's starting on the bottom inside of the driver's side door. Talk about P*****D OFF! The truck will be a year old next week with 8000 miles. I live in Ohio so I know winter weather & road salt play a factor but, i take great care of it with washing & etc. Is there anyone out there in the same boat or was? I know when I take it to the dealer they'll just zip it off & repaint it. I don't know if I should contact GM or what. I'm hoping this thing does not fall apart in 3 to 5 year's. So, if anyone has any input i'd appreciate it. Thanks, Jeff

I got my 04 from Ohio and it had rust under every door. It was along the small ridge where the outside part of metal wraps under the inside bottom. Dealer repaired and it looks good for now. Hope it stays that way. I think lots of trucks have it but no one really looks for it there. I have checked out quite a few trucks around here and have seen it on several more. That salt is hard on metal if it doesn't get wahed off.

When I bought my '06 Z71 crew cab new, first thing I did was spray CRC marine corrosion inhibitor on the inside bottom door seams and also along the hood inner creases. No signs of corrosion after 1.5 years and I live in coastal Florida, which is very corrosive to vehicles. On the plus side, I do not drive the truck much and it sits in the garage most of the time.

 

BTW, I owned a '95 Nissan V6 4x4 hardbody pickup for ten years, never sprayed any corrosion inhibitor on the doors or anywhere else and there was no corrosion after 10 years along the bottom of doors. chrome bumpers, etc. A sign of much better build quality, IMHO.

i siliconed the seem (NOT THE DRAIN HOLES) and no problems yet! I live in PA.

Pete, i agree the U.S. market seem's to run on quantity instead of quality. (IMHO) Thank you guy's for your input i'll look into your option's. Thanks, Jeff

Hmmm, I just traded my 2000 GMC for a NBS 07. After 7-1/2 years in Minnesota salt, I had NO rust anywhere on my truck.

I had the same bubbling paint issue on the inside of my doors at the sheet metal folds as well. This was early in my truck's life, and I took it to the dealer which had the body shop square it away. The estimate guy at the body shop told me it'd come back due to the drains being there and that fold being present. Sure enough it did. I had a friend who painted my motorcycle do some work on it last year again. Thankfully I got on top of it both times before it became a big problem rather than just the bubbles.

According to GM, you have a no-deductible 6 year 100k mile warranty on ANY paint imperfections. Bring it to your selling dealer and they will fix it.

Bring it to the dealer. Have the rust fixed. It won't cost you anything. Have them put some red rust killer primer down on the areas before they paint it.

I just bough a 04 Silverado and I just noticed that rust uder all my doors a few weeks ago like you guys have talked about. It was a Minnesota truck, but only hat 36,000 miles and appers that guy keep the truck very clean, no rust any where else. Does anyone know if I can still get the Dealer to fix this for free sice I bough used, but it is GM certified pre-owned if that changes anything.

i know while i was truck searching i looked at an o2 z71 that had allot of rust under the bumpers and around the corners of the doors!!! they gave me the keys to open it up and i said no thanks!!! my 04 z71 has zero rust !!! knock on wood good luck hope the fix goes well !! i'd like to know as well if they'd fix the rust since my truck is a certified gm truck as well??

My previous truck was a '97 C1500 with this problem. Was a perfectly clean 5 yr old truck from out of state when I bought it and within 2 yrs of NE Ohio salt was corroding badly along the bottom-backside of the lower door seams. This was dispite frequent washing and thoroughly rinsing the corrosion prone areas every spring. The body man at my Chevy dealer recommended WD40 followed by motor oil along those joints a couple time per year. Makes a mess but it was effective in slowing the corrosion to where I didn't bother repainting.

 

If you have lower sheetmetal corrosion, watch the condition of the frame. I took my old truck to the local Ziebart dealer where they removed the rust scale from the frame, treated the rust with a corrosion inhibitor, then undercoated the truck ($175, worth every penny). Was holding OK when I sold it. Really wish I had this done when I first bought it. Just hope my '07 NBS does better in the salt.

I dont know what I would do with having to contend with Salt. I guess it is one of the few good things about Houston weather?

Mine has the rust on the bottom of the doors as well. It's been garage kept and washed regularly so, it's just bad luck I guess. When I get time I'm gonna dremel/sand the rust off then spray some rust stopper and cover it with touch up paint. That should at least stop it.

Get use to this kind of stuff, and we can thank all the tree hugging hippy a@@holes who have nothing better to do with their lives then do drugs and pick up a cause of the week to protest, it is because of them all manufactures are now forced to use these crap water based paints that just do not hold up for @#$@! This is nothing new and pretty much every single car manufacture is having paint issues across the board because water based paints just plain @#!#!
