Does Your Tonneau Cover Leak?

I got a new Solid Fold 5 months ago it started leaking this fall, they sent me a new one last week it started leaking today :(

I don't want to play this game. The panel is leaking at the panel not the hinge.

hinge drains out the sides, but I'm seeing water along panels, right where the panel is inserted into the extruded aluminum

My Leer 550 doesn't seem to leak but it's a hard cover. It is flat on top unlike their 700. I like the look of the 550 better.

 

I looked at Bakflip but didn't care much for the stakes being open so I went with the Leer. I do like it other then if I want to remove it, it takes some help!

I went with the GM hard trifold which is also covered with convertible top material. Only been on for 3 months or so but it has been nothing soaking rains here every week. No leaks, a little right around the tailgate when opening and closing while wet. My only concern is how the convertible top material will hold up over time. Not sure who actually makes this cover for GM. I did do a little extra sealing around stake pockets and front edge of the bed with camper tape as the bed is not all the same height. Two people can remove it in a couple of minutes.

I had a Fold-A-Cover on my 2003 Chevy EC/SB 1500 Z-71 and my 2006 Chevy 2500HD CC/SB Duramax. The Fold-A-Cover was flawless in every way and did not leak.

 

When I bought my new 2010 Chevy 1500 CC/SB Z-71, I seriously looked at Fold-A-Cover and the design had changed. The new lock-down was probably better, but in looking at the online instructions, it was unbelieveably complicated ... Hey, I'm a Certified Master Watchmaker (no kidding), but this sucker was silly.

 

Soooo, I did a serious search and came up with the Line-X Cover. I ordered it online and it was delivered to my local Line-X dealership in a few weeks. I might add that Diamondback, the manufacturer, kept in constant contact with me by e-mail, so I knew what stage my tonneau was at almost every single day ... nice touch.

 

I installed my Line-X Cover in about a half an hour, alone. I made a single error in the install which resulted in a very small leak along the rear of the bed. After re-reading the instructions and LOOKING at how the gaskets fit-up, I understood and I made a two-minute adjustment.

 

Since then, in something over one year, my Line-X Cover has not leaked a single drop. I live in NW Oregon and it rains here ... in fact, we've gotten four-inches of rain in the last two days, so we know rain :ughdance::ughdance::ughdance:

 

I would highly recommend the Line-X Cover. Maybe a bit spendy, but worth it. In fact, I'm so danged delighted with it, I'd even consider an upgrade to the Diamondback, with Line-X on it, for my next rig.

 

I'm an old cocker, though, so there probably will not be a "next rig."

Note: The front end opens the same as this. Actually, quite handy and neither catches the wind when deer hunting in Montana or Wyoming like the full-covers do (I actually saw one ripped off in Wyoming).

If you want a tonneau cover that is secure & dry, buy the ARE brand hard cover. I have had them on my last 2 pickups with excellent results, NO leaks & very secure, but they are more expensive than a soft cover,( you get what you pay for)

    • This is exactly the reason our EV has consumed so much of my driving. I don't want to fire up a cold diesel or gas engine just to drive 2 miles up to the store. It's arguably terrible for an engine. If I'm not driving at least 10 miles and don't need to do truck things, the truck stays parked.   Enter the EV. It's immediately heating or cooling the cabin as needed (heat pump). An engine doesn't need to warm up or be driven gently. I can tear off in it with ZERO guilt. Move the car 1/4 mile from store to store and not think "gee, I'm short-cycling a lukewarm engine".   It doesn't idle in a drive-through. Doesn't idle at stop lights. (OK, neither would the diesel, if I let stop-start have its way, but I don't).   Even moving it out of the garage to wash it... HA! It doesn't need to be started just to move 40 feet. I have cars that I will actually put in neutral and push (no start) in/out of the garage or shop if they absolutely HAVE to be moved. My nice Camaros.

    • I traced the atf cooling system in my 1500 and it comes out of the transmission, into the bar/plate liquid/liquid heat exchanger, as stated above.  Then it crosses over to the external thermostat/bypass and then  to the aux cooler in front of the main radiator.  Hence, on this routing, the PPE thermostat bypass eliminator is an $85 piece of bling that does nothing for reducing atf temps on this truck.  I think I'll temporarily clamp a needle nose vise grip on the coolant feed hose to the bar/plate cooler and see how much the atf temp drops.  With the use of ULV trans fluid, I'm not convinced running the trans cooler than OEM spec is going to be detrimental to the life of the transmission.    I found this interesting on the Dana/Long site stating that they make transmission cooling/heating bar plate heat exchangers.  I worked with Dana/Long on a few projects when I was at the gas powered fun factory. https://www.dana.co.jp/downloads/PTG/Long/Dana_TOC_SpecSht.pdf  Bar plate heat exchangers are just a stack of stamped parallel path fluid channels, assembled and vacuum furnace brazed to make the final assembly.  Want more cooling/heating, just stack more plates until you run out of package space.   Anyway, thanks for the info, much appreciated.
    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
