WHAT CAR DEALERS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW. By author Mark Eskeldson.

This may be an out of print book. It is a must read for just about anyone who is planning to purchase a new or used vehicle.

I would guess that everyone or nearly everyone who purchases a new vehicle thinks that THEY got the best deal and that THEIR deal was better than the next person's deal.

This book explains all the tricks used to get money out of the buyer even if the buyer thinks otherwise.

Read the book and one will find out how you may have been taken for a lot of money or just a little money.

And if you are financing, the book is a real must read.

Library or eBay has this book.

For people looking for info, here are some links.

A reporter from Edmunds goes udercover and talks about his experience as a car salesman, including some tips and tricks

It's long, but very, very informative. This thing saved me probably $5,000 on the first new car I bought.

Second, this is how I deal with car dealerships now. The internet/fleet sales manager.

You work up the price of the vehicle on edmunds, include all options. Then you check the invoice price, check the rebates/offers, and send emails out to the local internet/fleet sales managers in your area. "I want this car, I'm willing to pay X amount" (which is usually just a bit over invoice, depending on the popularity of the vehicle, can be under invoice if there are manufacturer's rebates) and they reply with a "yes" or "no". Has worked every time.

It's a variant of the "Rizzo Method"

This stuff can save you thousands of dollars if you know what you are doing.

Could have been an honest mistake.

But it has happened at every dealer I have visited including the one today.

SEO paint - non-standard paint colors. Four colors are no charge. The other SEO paints are $275.00. I have chosen one of the no charge paints. The no charge SEO paints are the most common SEO colors. So there really can't be an excuse for the sales manager or fleet manager not to know this.

They tried and failed to add $275 for this paint on an ordered (not yet) truck.

The fleet manager is my favorite as most dealers have a dedicated internet sales mgr. Also the fleet salesperson deals 80% in trucks and vans and usually knows the product very well. I have been dealing with the same fleet person since 1989. I have bought 5 new vehicles from him and always enjoy doing business with him. He makes car buying fun.

Whatever you do, Don't Drive Your New Car Away Without A Solid Loan In Place!! I got stung with that ONCE but I'm willing to admit it if it will save someone else some $$. When I bought my '98 S-10 brand new I drove it away thinking all was rosey. The next day I got a call from the salesman saying they needed another $1000 to make the loan "work". I was a young kid (20 yrs) and didn't know any better so I went back to put a "down payment" on the truck. It did lower the payment slightly but little did I know he had no right to call me the next day and demand another amount of money when he sent me away the day before with my new truck thinking everything was done. I found out that when I drove off on day one they didn't even have the financing in place! I asked if I could just have my trade back and walk away and he said my old car (a '74 VW) was a 'beer can by now'. I found out that statement was a steaming pile of BS too because my '74 VW turned up abandoned three years later with my name still on the title so I got it back anyway. What an A**H***.

Above is another reason for young or inexperienced buyers to read this book.

I have loaned this book out to others and sadly they do not read it. Mostly, they are too macho or they think that they are just too smart and really don't need no book to buy a car/truck.

One time, I loaned this book out to a young neighber gal. She kept book for over a month but retuned it stating she had no time to read it. She started but stated that it was too dull.

Later she went out and purchased a used 3 year old Suburu 4 door sedan with 50,000 miles from a dealer for $15,000.00 at 18% interest.

You can bring a horse to water but you cannot make the horse drink!
