My Buddy Choose Silverado

A bit of a feel good story...

A friend of mine has been in the market for a new crew cab 1500 4x4 to tow his boat and for some light duty plowing. Except for wanting to buy an American truck (i.e. no Tundras or Titans) he is by no means brand biased. After driving the Ram, F150, and Silverado he choose Silverado. He didn't like the fit and finish of the Ram and said the ride quality wasn't great. It was close between the F150 and the Silverado. He said the Silverado won out based on actual full size back seat and a few other minor things. He did say the power was comparable (5.3L in the Chevy and the 5.4L in the Ford) and they both road and drove nice.

I did my best not to push him towards GM because I was curious as to what he would choose on his own. Made me smile when he chose the Silverado.

I'm a diehard GM guy, both with old and new auto's. I'll be the first to admit though that the F150 package from Ford is very nice and a good truck as well. Before I bought my truck, I took a look at the Ford's knowing full well I was not going to be buying one I wanted to see what they were offering. I was impressed and all for dirt cheap too, in the end the styling ques and quality of the GM product as well as my loyality made my decision.

The reason it is dirt cheap is becuase the materials used to make F150's is so cheap i'm surprised it's legal to drive them on the road (at least the new ones). I know 2 people 1 with a 06 the other with an 07. The 06 with 20K mi. Clinks, Clanks, and Clunks, The 4wd sticks and the ac comes out somewhere but any of the floor or dash vents, and the seats are ripping. Now with the 07 the fabric on the seats feel tissue paper thin and the cab that used to be insulated with sound dampening foam is no longer either.

Their seats are made of some crappy fabric, and thats something to be said considering the 900's seat fabric. the one thing i noticed on my roomates it that the door panels clunk over bumps. just feels cheap, besides that everything feels nicely put together, even though i dont like the layout.

Ordering a 2008.

My options are quite specific. I also visited Ford. Large discount Ford dealership.

Option for option, the Chevy/GMC was considerably less. At least on the F150 XL vs the GMC/Chevy 1500.

Also, this is the last year of the current Ford design. All new next year.

When this latest generation of Ford F150 came out 2004, I read an article in Automotive News that the Ford F150 was $1,800.00 (on average) more to produce than a comperable GM Dodge. All component divisions were told to cut something from this $1,800.00 from the cost of the F150. So how does a company cut $1,800.00 from a truck? Your guess is as good as mine. I certainly would not want a Ford F150 from this generation. The F250 is another story.

I just bought a 2007 NBS Silverado Z71 after 20 years driving Toyotas. My 2000 Tundra was built in Indiana though and had more US content than an F-150. I just couldn't warm up to the new Tundra design. The LTZ interior on the Silverado (and GMC) is the best thing going as I see it. I'm happy with my choice. - Lee
