Why Is The 403hp Sierra Denali Slower Than A Tundra?

Not to start a flame war or anything but I was use to hearing all of my GM buddies yapping about how if GM put the 403hp 6.2L 6spd Auto from the Escalade into a 1/2 ton truck it will smoke the Tundra.

 

Well.. now that it happened how come its still slower? I mean the Tundra is heavier by almost 330 lbs, has less hp 381hp but yet still manages to rip the Denali a new one?

But the GMC Sierra Denali is not the quickest truck on the market. That title is held by the new Toyota Tundra with its 381-hp, 5.7-liter V8. In our testing, the four-wheel-drive Tundra Double Cab pounds to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds and runs the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 93.7 mph, even though it weighs 328 pounds more than the Sierra Denali.

 

Sometimes power isn't enough to guarantee dominance. Or maybe either GMC or Toyota or both are wrong about the power numbers they're publishing.

 

So looks like GM might be overrating their 6.2 Vortec hmmm?? For 46k bucks, don't you expect it to at least match the Tundra's acceleration spec?

 

I KNOW I'M GONNA GET A BUNCH OF CRAP ABOUT HOW TRUCKS ARE NOT MADE FOR SPEED AND MADE FOR TOWING YADDA YADDA ECT. But how do you explain Denali's 8500lb max towing capacity compared to Tundra's 10,800lb tow capacity?

 

Please help me understand? Cause right now its Toyota power > GM power

Torque Management. Also the Denali is made for luxury, not drag racing. Plus with the reins on the Denali, the Tundra was only .2 sec faster.

Gear ratios, plain and simple. If GM would put a 4.10 or even 3.73 into the Sierra it would smoke the s**t out of the Tundra.

Blingin' rims are useless for "drag racing" as well. If I remember correctly, the tundra they tested for speed had 18 inch wheels and a 4.10 rear axle.

Tune the 6.2 denali and watch the Tundra in the rear view mirrors, even a RC SB 2wd. Factory tuning on those are rediculously out of this world lame. 14.1-14.3 stock as a rock on Hptuners or EFI live. Did Edmunds mention anything about axle gear ratio's?

 

As for towing capacity, get real. Ford F150's are rated up there with the Tundra, and they have a 300hp 5.4l turd. Explain that. I mean, in your logic, 381 hp with 10800lb towing vs 300 hp with 10100~ towing = Ford Power > Toyota power. Thats drastically shamefull Not to mention the FORD is packing a 4 speed auto. Ouch. On a side note because I can tell your going to bring it up anyways, with 380hp and a 6 speed, I would only hope and pray a Tundra would out accellerate a Ford F150.

GM has the 3:73 rear............Blundra has a 4:30

So it suprises you the blundra is quicker in the 1/4 mile and has a

larger towing capacity?

Also, the tests were done on different days at different times of the year. For more accurate results, both trucks SHOULD have been tested on the same day.

 

Just another one of those things that pissed me off about Edmunds.

 

Plus, your basing your results on one test by one group.

If a higher axle ratio is better for towing AND acceleration, why doesn't GM put it in a higher one in the first place? Sounds like their 6spd ratios are off also. Maybe GM did that for better gas mileage? Umm....thats weird because the Tundra gets 20mpg Highway even with that nice 4.10 axle ratio.

 

Oh btw thats not my truck in my sig, I found the pic on Tundrasolution and figured I use it as my sig since it looks pretty badass. My dad said if I do well in school next year I get to choose the truck of my choice..... hey if GM gets their act together and put that 6.2L into the reg Sierra plus put in better gearing and get rid of that s**tty torque management crap ... maybe i'll be driving a Sierra. Who knows.

All makes sense now. It isn't just about, acceleration and towing capacity. It also has to do with fuel economy, there is no way that Tundra gets 20mpg. Period.

 

Why bother trying to explain these things, some kids just don't get it, but apparently money will make up for the lack of intelligence, regardless of its source.

My best friend has an 07 TuRD 5.7L access cab. It's more than broken in and averages 13.5 mpg. His best highway mileage was 17. Straight from the horses mouth and I've seen the mileage on the trucks computer myself.... 20mpg my ass...
