Thoughts On My New 07 So Far

This is one smoooth truck and being the first vehicle I have purchased new, I am very happy with it. Definitly a noticable power difference between the old 280HP 5.3L from my 99, and the new 315?HP on the 07. I forgot what a smooth shifting tranny was until I drove this thing! The black looks awesome, but dang it is hard to keep clean!

 

Problem areas:

 

1. OnStar- its going in monday to another GMC dealer to fix the OnStar system, it was not programmed correctly.

 

2. Popping noises from the Exhaust- the thing pops and pops and pops. Not backfire, but the metal on the muffler once it gets hot? What the hell? Did they use cheap sheetmetal for an exhaust system?

 

3. The plastic trim around the bottom of the doors is easy to scuff when getting in and out of the truck.

 

4. The Key FOB bangs against the steering wheel coloum too loud, its constant tap tap tap with the roads around here. Thinking about putting some soft rubber on the coloum to absorb the sound better.

 

5. I should have gotton a Flex Engine!

 

6. Plastic trim on the front lower bumper is lower to the ground then I would like.. hope this will not turn out to be a problem when I go driving with 2-3ft of snow on the ground, was able to get around rather well with my 99

 

7. Who the hell designed the 4WD switch and why is there not a larger 4WD mode light on the thing that tells you when it is in 4WD!? I'm looking at some little light on the round switch that is smaller then the tip of a pencil!

 

What I love most about it:

 

1. The looks, GMC looks much cleaner and more aggressive then the Silverado

2. The Engine- It may not be some silly 360HP Tundra or Titan, but its going to be a heck of alot more reliable then those.

3. People stop and look at the truck, and other truck owners (most noticbly new Dodge Ram drivers are not passing me but instead staying behind or to the side, getting a good look at the truck

4. The inside dash cluster- GM really did a wing ding job on it, it does not have that "Cheap" look to it like on the NBS from 99 - 2007

5. I love the "new truck" smell!

Yeah, the key thing has bothered for a while...Did it worse on my 2500HD especially with my full set of keys on it, constantly slapping the dash so now I just take the key off the ring when I'm going further than around my driveway.

On #3: I found the issue with snagging the plastic trim on the door bottom became a non-issue after installing steps. Might just be an age thing but steps help alot getting into this truck. One thing I don't like on this body design is the lower lip of the doors are not protected from road splash. I can see this inverted "V" seal & 1-inch gap packing with salty slush and eventually being a corrosion prone area. Would prefer nerf bars but went with Luverne stainless steel steps to protect this area.

 

On #7: Sooo, I'm not the only one going blind. My sister told me bi-focals with fix this problem. Guess the positive thing is you shouldn't have to mess with the switch too much with an auto-trac transfer case.

The key thing annoys me also,I tried some soft material around the column and dash area were it was hitting,Didn't work,The rest of my keys would bang and annoy the hell outta me,I ended up buying a duel key ring with one of those "quick-release" things that allow you to separate the two halves,That way the key is all by itself in the ignition cylinder and I lay the rest of my keys in the center console while I'm driving.

(I had the same issue with my GMT800 trucks but the soft material around the column/dash worked)

Condition:

Some customers may comment on a popping/snapping noise from underneath the vehicle at idle or immediately after the vehicle is shut off. Some popping/snapping noise from the exhaust system during cool down is a normal condition.

 

The noise may be intermittent depending on the outside temperature and or temperature of the exhaust system at the time of testing.

 

Cause:

As the exhaust system warms and cools, the muffler and the muffler heat shield expand and contract at different rates. The straps currently used to hold the exhaust shield in place may not be crimped tight enough to stop the muffler heat shield from moving.

 

Correction:

Replace the straps on the muffler heat shield.

2. Exhaust system is heavily heat shielded. It bothered me at first cause I hadn't heard cool down popping like that since the family '55 Buick. I like that it keeps the bed floor from getting hot and I really don't notice it anymore.

 

6. I thought that lower valence was a little too low myself. Snow not a problem in the South but I was on I-75 a couple of weeks ago and was forced to straddle a complete semi-tractor tire (known as a "road gator") in the road. I knew it was going to tear that trim off, it cleared it handily.

 

5. 'Til this GMT900 I haven't bought a new vehicle since the '80s and the rarified atmosphere of new vinyl, rubber, paint, and fabric is intoxicating. :thumbs:

I added a piece of the fuzzy side of velcro for the key fob bounce. You can get it in several colors at craft stores. Alcohol swab the place before you stick it and it should stay for a while. When it falls off just put another piece. Did this on several other trucks and they would last on average of a year.

 

My S-10 had a factory rubber piece just for this, dunno why they didn't do it again (Ok really I know - because it cost 0.50 in parts and $5.00 in labor to install...)

Yep,Thats exactly what I used,But it wouldn't help keep my other keys from bouncing around and annoying the living hell outta me!!! :thumbs:

Ryan, we share many of the same sentiments, for the new truck.

 

The new 5.3 is a world better than the older engine. I don't regret not having a 6.0 at least. What color is your interior? I have the ebony because I was afraid the light grey or tan would scuff bad on the doors. The 4wd knob is a little obscure and hidden, I wish the indicator for 4wd was bigger/brighter. At least the airdam is easy to remove, mine is off, I crunched it twice in the first month. It is also really flexible, so I don't think it will get torn as easy.

 

I like the interior for looks, but it is still just hard plastic, I wish we could get something a little more 'supple' or 'rich' textured, rather than the 'hollow' feeling plastic. All the surfaces feel real 'hard'...

I guess it depends on your height or where you sit in the truck etc..but I can't even see the indicator light on the 4wd knob. It's hidden behind the steering wheel and partially the gear shift.

 

I prefer a manual shift transfer case but .... anyway a light on the dash would be nice similar to cruise or something.

 

I noticed on the LTZ trim it's moved to the left side of the steering wheel, not sure if it would be more visible there or not as I haven't set in one with it.

Everytime I see my plastic trim - I hit them, now my plam is Red... :crackup:

I looked at the same 07 for the last two weekends on Sunday while the dealership was closed. I really like the trucks. I guess this weekend I may go up there and see what kind of money we can talk about. I really like the new GMC trucks. Glad to hear everyone is happy with their trucks.

    • In most areas of the country, wages have trailed CPI increases over time (let's say, since the 70's) and things like housing, energy, and food have vastly outpaced wages on the whole. Can't ignore that, it's very real.   That isn't to say there aren't ways to live in ways that mitigate some of that, including moving to cheaper areas of the country. In KNut's neck of the world, median housing prices in "nearby" Dallas are more like $500k. If you're raising a family and young in a successful career, your economic opportunities are probably going to be better living closer to Dallas than Cornhole. A 3 hour (6+ round trip) daily commute probably isn't tolerable for most folks. Grumpy mentioned economic migration; but we've seen what happens when people populate and grow an area. It becomes more expensive when economic opportunities come to roost.   One thing different now from back in the 70's is our quality and standard of living has changed. Healthcare is light years better, for example. But it's also much more expensive. And we have communication and information/tech tools that folks in the 70's could never imagine, and they're accessible to people of just about all incomes. Cars are light years safer, faster, and filled with tech advances. Homes are larger, more energy-efficient, and more luxurious on the whole, from starter homes to luxury homes.   Seattle was once affordable. My folks came here in the 70's with a lot of other people from California looking to escape uncontrolled sprawl, smog, and rising prices in the Bay Area. Seattle and the surrounding area has grown considerably; The home they bought for, I think it was $70k or $80k in the late 70's is now worth $1.2M today. The same house.   So while there have been obvious boosts in some areas of quality and standard of living, regarding opportunity, that's a bit more nuanced. It's really not possible for young people to get started in similar situations in areas of the country that have become "HCOL" (high cost of living). There are many more areas than before, which is to say they exclude younger workers or make their lives significantly harder. They have to commute farther and longer to afford to live in the area. They have to take outsized risk, take on more debt, significantly delay family planning. Or, they could move somewhere cheaper, but there's usually a loss of economic opportunity that comes with that. Even for the same job, it may pay a lot less in a LCOL.   What I don't like are Boomers with phones thinking they have all the answers and outright saying that if people stopped paying for their cell phone that they'd be rich. It's as stupid and misguided as people who think they'd only be rich if taxes weren't so high. Sorry guys, Elon proved you wrong on that one, I guess you're just lazy and blaming your own situation for the reason you're not wealthy. Mobile communication is basically an expectation in a modern society and workforce and it's often cheaper than having a copper landline these days, so... What's your point?
    • My 2008 started exhibiting similar symptoms, wasn't 'cold' enough. I went through a pretty extensive diagnostic process for a DIY'er with limited OBD access. System evacuation and recharge included.   Noticed one day the passenger side was cold (I'm never over there so took awhile to notice).   Pulled the drivers side blend door actuator out, disassembled it and cleaned it out. Put it back in and did some kind of reset and it fixed the problem.   Long story short, it wasn't the A/C system at fault, the blend door wasn't moving to full cold position. 
    • Just got in two back to back road trips of about 700 miles each with my new 2026 2500HD trail boss.  Really nice highway cruiser. Two very different trips - both loaded with gear for my band. First trip was to Durango for an event with Indian Motorcycle - saw some really nice bikes while out there! All mountain driving on back country highways - very pretty scenery - lots of hills along the way including a crazy pass that went up to 11,000 feet! Overall MPG for that trip was 15, speeds were typically 60-70 range depending on road.   This past weekend was into rural Nebraska, so mostly fast interstate (76 and 80) with some fast 2 lane getting to / from the final destination outside of North Platt. Speeds mostly ~80.  Also mostly flat although somehow dropped from 5K to 3K feet and then back up getting back into CO - didn't really notice it was subtle probably over a long distance. Overall MPG for the trip was 14.   Truck is still barely broken in - just got past 2K miles on the second trip. We survived some torrential thunderstorms in NE on Sat. night - especially driving to the hotel after the gig at 1AM.  Truck didn't skip a beat - I think the weight of these HD trucks really reduces the hydroplane chances.   All good - made it back to Denver area mid day on Sunday for fathers day.   I did a quick calculation to compare MPG and overall trip cost to my previous truck, a 2018 Colorado V6.  From previous experience I would have expected to see a 4mpg improvement on both trips.  Based on current gas prices which are starting to come down but still $0.75 to $1 higher than they should be based on barrel pricing, each trip was about $40 more.  Really not much of a concern in the grand scheme of things I must say.
