Is GM's Green Tech Better Than Toyota's?

That's what Chrysler, Daimler, and BMW seem to think. They're all using GM's hybrid technology for their new trucks and SUVs

by David Kiley

In the next 24 months, General Motors (GM), Chrysler, Daimler (DAI) and BMW (BMWG) will collectively bring out at least nine hybrid trucks and sport-utility vehicles, including the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chrysler's Aspen and Dodge Durango, which are being unveiled this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. But for the conditions of a joint technology agreement among the companies, each vehicle might have a badge on its side-panel that says "GM Inside."

I'm confused.... Daimler & Chrysler are not one company anymore?

No Daimler sold Chrysler to CERBERUS, then Chrysler was brought private.

If GM could get 500 million dollars for licensing their hybrid system that would go a long way to help pay off those extra expenses it owes. I would like to see this system a success so that people realize that GM is in the forefront of technology, and not in the rear as so many people think.

I'd laugh my everloving ass off if I saw a Durango with "GM" on the side of it.

My head would probably pop right off if I saw it on the side of a BMW.

Another bit of interesting news. BMW has stated they will be using the new six speed trannie from GM because it is superior to its own and all others it tested. Now that's awsome info. I'll see if I can find the actual news article on that.

I have been saying for the past couple of years, watch the General, they are on their way back. I think news like this confirms this. Take it another step further and look at some of their new products, the 900 series trucks, the Lucerne, the GMC Acadia and Buick and Saturn equivalents and the new Malibu, all seem to be class leading vehicles.

IMO, there biggest challenge right now is they need a complete turn around in the area of their Customer Service Departments i.e. Service Consultants and Service Managers. Please do not misuderstand what I am saying, there are many very good people in these positions but there are also many that need "to find another seat on the bus". Consumers want any issues (especially with a $35K vehicle) they have to be addressed professionaly, efficeintly and correctly while they are being treated like they are the only customer on the planet. Many companies are making big changes to do this and I would think GM needs to begin moving in that direction if they are not already.

I realize this is very difficult because they do not own their Dealerships and these people do not work for them. We have the same issue within CARQUEST. Many of our stores are company owned and we do have some control over the service level from these stores. On the other hand, we service over 1,400 stores in the US that are Independently owned and we really cannot control the service they offer. We encourage and offer training, but ultimately it is up the them.
