Rear Gears

Hello,

My truck has lower gears than I would like but I cant complain because I got the truck for a steal. Does anyone have a price estimate of how much it would cost to upgrade my rear axle gears to a 3.55 or 3.73? Also when I would upgrade the gears does the differential part get exhanged also? The reason I am asking this is because I am planning on putting a 90% limited Slip axle locker and I was wondering if there is a kit for limited slip lockers with the gears to upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.

So your saying you have 4.10's in your rig now? If you do it yourself, bank on $500-700 or if you want GM to do it I was quoted twice that amount.

Sorry I have higher gears than I would like. I currently have 3.05 ratio and I would like to upgrade it to a 3.55 or 3.73 with limited slip any ideas on the price to upgrade. Would it be cheaper to ungrade the ratio and locker at the same time or seperately?

You could go here Jawsgear Locker/PT to look for a locker or positrac unit and here Jawsgear Ring & Pinion for gearing prices. Would be much easier to do all at the same time since you'll have it apart anyway. Still not sure what ride you have but those 3.05 gears need to go. That thing must be a dog!

Good Luck

No, sorry about the error. I have 3.23 gears in my Crew Cab Silverado with 4.8L V8. Even though they are just 3.23 they can still tear it down the road. But I am looking for a little more power for towing and I am putting larger tires on so the extra power will come in handy.

You might look for a wrecked truck with the rear end you want and swap the entire thing. You are going to have to change both the ring and pinion as well as the carrier - as well as all the bearings. I did it over 20yrs ago and it was about 400 at the dealer - you probably could not get the parts for that now.

The only problem with that would be that I have the NBS Silverado. Would that make any difference or is my rear end gearing compatible with past trucks? If so which year models?

Mathew, if you are going to make a move from 3.23's don't take a small step to the 3.55's. Go ahead and do at least the 3.73s and you may want to consider the 4.10s depending on what you are towing.

Not sure where you are located in LA but there is a gear specialist in Baton Rouge called Zimmer Gears. They are located on Choctaw about a mile east of Airline. They have been around for years and this is all they do, so they should be good at it.

I'd bank approx. $500-700 an axle. That would include the l.slip in the rear.

Why screw around with 4:10s.............If your gonna spend the $2000 bucks to cobble up

that new truck just go with a set of 5:88s and a true full locker set up !!!!!!!!!!!

Then you can get the 10 second 1/4 mile times as well as tow 25,000 lbs. and 5 mpg.

you really want from your truck !

Don't be dissappointed again !
