So I'm driving down the highway, a large truck passes me going the other way. Anyway, a rock flew off and hit the windsheild. Right when I heard it, I knew it hurt the windsheild. Sure enough, I have a spot about 1/2 inch circle where it it cracked. Question, insurance is sending a company out to my house to replace the entire windsheild. However, I hear that they can fix this type of damage? anyone know how good? I thought I just may have them do this, instead of replacing the whole thing..... I have tint at the top and didn't want to have to deal with that as well. Plus they always seem to scratch somthing or screw something else up.

Yea, it happens all the time down here in Mississippi. It is not state law for a gravel truck to have a cover over it here and that is why I try to stay off interstate when possible and will do almost anything to pass such a vehicle when needed.

My mom travels 20 miles interstate every day and has at least one windsheild claim per 1-2 months.

Repairs to windshields are OK, if the damage is not too large. The repair will be visible, however. If the damage is in a line-of-sight area of the windshield or there is a crack, most shops will not make the repair. I took a rock to my windshield about a month ago. Hit me dead center on the windshield. Left a bullseye about 3/4" in diameter. My insurance company would not pay for a repair and required replacement due to size and location. Makes you sick, but better to hit the windshield than the sheet metal.

It depends on where the rock chip is as and size as to whether it is fixable. Anything in the driver's viewing area is normally not repaired. Most repairs are very good unless you wait too long and debris gets in the hole. I used to buy the cheap repair kits from the autoparts house and repair my own. Essentially the repair will vacuum the air created by the chip and replace with a resin that is normally heat or sunlight activated. You will still have the initial damage caused by the rock, usually just a small impact chip, but not very noticeable. I used to have two or three of these repairs a year but changed jobs so I don't travel secondary roads as much and run up on logging or construction trucks.

 

I wouldn't hesitate to have a repair done if it was from a reputable company, usually the cost is around $50.

Yes, it is better that it hit the window rather then sheet metal... that would really make be pissed. I may ask them to just repair it ..... since it is on the passanger side. Either way, insurance is paying for it
