Question On Miles

Is what I need to know is what mileage to the motors start to go bad in a GMC Sierra 1500 and a 2500.. is 180,000 Miles to many miles??? Thanks

It all depends on how it's been driven and how will it was maintained. I work at a dealership and have seen trucks come in with 69K on them and they're trashed. I've also seen ones with 200K and they look like new. Obviously highway miles are alot better then all city miles as far as wear and tear.

The highest mileage 5.3 I have ever seen was just over 300K. All highway but with a 3K to 4K lb trailer behind it. He had replaced the trans but the engine was still strong.

As previously said, it all depends on the care and maint.

I have a parts delivery guy that has well over 300K on his 99 5.3. Yes, he has also had a trans replacement but I am amazed the truck is still running. I love my GM truck but that is one hell of a lot of miles. It still runs very well. He has been the only driver since new.

At 180K it becomes VERY important how well the truck has been maintained. Obviously, it is also important what kind of repairs have been made. Wear and tear items wear out regardless of how well it has been maintained. Depending on these items, it could be a solid truck or a total piece of s**t... Really should have a qualified mechanic have a look at one that high in miles before buying.

At the rate I am going with my truck, It will be another 58 years before I get to 180k miles. :rollin:

Man, Pete... You need to get out more!

Its not a V8 in a truck but I got almost 242,000 miles on the original engine my Corsica,My Dad bought it new,Its never had the oil pan, intake manifold or valve covers off.

So these engines can last when maintained and taken care of.

It's not that. I drive a lot, it's just that I do not use the truck all that much. I have plenty of other vehicles. My '99 Mazda 626 has over 182k miles on it and I bought it new. Then there is my motorcycle and a diesel Mercedes car. And of course, my deuce and half, but that one I drive very little, as it is hard on fuel, noisy, and slow.
